Norfolk House Hotel

Story

Norfolk House, in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, was the headquarters of The Automobile Association from the mid-1990s until 2003. It was originally intended to replace Fanum House as the AA's HQ, but ultimately the building was not large enough to accommodate all Basingstoke-based employees and both buildings operated concurrently. The building was purpose-built, and located at the Aldermaston Road roundabout, at the junction of the Basingstoke ring road and the A340. It consisted of three permanent structures, the main office block and car park, a technology centre, and the AA sports and social club/museum which featured squash courts and other sports facilities, with a bar on part of the first floor. There was also a security gatehouse and a petrol pump, used by AA employees to fill company vehicles. The main building was above three levels of undercover car park. There were three floors, including the entrance (ground) floor. The ground floor featured a large reception area with marble floors, an employee cafeteria, and office wings on either side accessible to employees by swiping their ID card. The offices were constructed around internal garden areas. The upper floors were accessed by a curved, floating staircase, or by lift. Each floor had a circular balcony overlooking the reception area. One side of the 2nd (top) floor was a plush executive suite, with very large glass offices for the AA Director-General and the other directors, executive washrooms, and meeting rooms. The AA boardroom with an anteroom was within this suite. The executive suite was not accessible to the majority of employees, as it required a special ID card access. There was also a dedicated executive catering facility, with its own dining rooms. These were used both by the directors on a day-to-day basis, and for entertaining guests from other motoring associations worldwide and commercial partners.

Stayed for only one night, which is a shame because this place is really great! The garden is spacious, well kept and has a pool. Great for the modest price.Rooms: 5/5
Very nice and friendly helpful people. Problem is that this ain't no hotel but a Bed & Breakfast. If you want a drink or something to eat you have got a twenty minute walk along a horrendous road to cope with.Rooms: 4/5
An amazing hotel with great service and food. The pool was freezing though! Despite this, this hotel is one of the best that I have been to and will definitely go again. I last went to this place a few years ago, yet I still remember it! I had a great experience and have fond memories of it. I 100% recommend this hotel.Rooms: 5/5
A lovely hotel with the owner making me feel very welcome. I stay 1 night a week and it really is home from home. I leave early in the morning so don't get a chance for breakfast but I have seen the breakfast room set up and it looks lovely. I hope I can always get my room as I feel very comfortable there. Oh and they have Charlie the cat which makes it even better...
This hotel is very comfortable and friendly. The owner could not be more helpful. The pool looked very inviting, but I did not have the time try it out. A good location on Bath Road, that is easy to find. A pleasant walk from the nearby Elizabeth Line station of Taplow, but it is about one mile.Rooms: 5/5
Breakfast is delicious. Very affordable with great sized comfortable rooms. Very clean! Lovely owners- so polite and friendly. Nice atmosphere compared to huge chain hotels. Lovely garden views! One very big downfall that would stop me ever staying here again. Constant cold water. There was no hot water from our shower for the whole stay. We’d booked the hotel for a party nearby and it was pretty horrendous having to have a quick ice cold shower before and in the morning after. The only help provided was ‘sorry our hot water is on auto so maybe wait’. Completely ruined the stay here in all honesty.
Had a lovely 4 day stay, room was incredibly comfortable with everything you needed. Breakfast delicious, cooked to order. Staff very friendly. Very convenient location. Woukd recommend.
A very nice place. We stayed overnight, our room was ample, nice and very comfortable. Good bathroom. Nice views from our windows. Nice garden. Great swimming pool. Very good breakfast area. Our English breakfast was nearly burnt and very small portion. Despite this, we liked: the service of the young woman at the reception. Very helpful, kind and friendly. Free parking within the premises. Free Wifi Cleanliness. Nice room. Good surroundings, close to the river.
We spent two nights for a wedding here and had a great time. The chap who runs it is really attentive and always on hand. The place is quiet and has a lovely large garden with a pool. The rooms were really clean and breakfast was lovely too. Great for the price.
On the face of it this was a lovely hotel in a brilliant setting with a pool. Service was excellent breakfast was excellent but....... Every time someone turned on a hot water tap a very loud water pump started up which would have been ok but not at 6am in the morning. Spent 2 nights here and because of this pump did not get a very good nights sleep on either night. Such a shame as otherwise it was brilliant. I can't understand why they don't put some form of soundproofing around the pump.
