Newstead Abbey Museum

Story

Newstead Abbey, in Nottinghamshire, England, was formerly an Augustinian priory. Converted to a domestic home following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it is now best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron.Monastic foundationThe priory of St. Mary of Newstead, a house of Augustinian Canons, was founded by King Henry II of England about the year 1170, as one of many penances he paid following the murder of Thomas Becket. Contrary to its current name, Newstead was never an abbey: it was a priory. In the late 13th century, the priory was rebuilt and extended. It was extended again in the 15th-century, when the Dorter, Great Hall and Prior's Lodgings were added. The priory was designed to be home to at least 13 monks, although there appears to have been only 12 (including the Prior) at the time of the dissolution. The Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1534 gave the clear annual value of this priory as £167 16s. 11½d. The considerable deductions included 20s. given to the poor on Maundy Thursday in commemoration of Henry II, the founder, and a portion of food and drink similar to that of a canon given to some poor person every day, valued at 60s. a year.Despite the clear annual value of Newstead being below the £200 assigned as the limit for the suppression of the lesser monasteries, this priory obtained the doubtful privilege of exemption, on payment to the Crown of the heavy fine of £233 6s. 8d in 1537.

Loved our trip here. The volunteers and staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. My wife worked here 40 years ago and created the screens in the photos, Simon, the curator, showed them to us even though they are temporarily in storage. Lovely experience for her.
It’s a large estate and a grand building. It’s a good history lesson and has so much potential, well done to all the splendid volunteers who help to preserve it. There is a nice little cafe and courtyard tooVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Incredible historic site filled with mystery and intrigue. Wonderful to tour the house with really lovely staff on site who know the history and share anecdotes of newstead abbey. The grounds are also wonderful to explore and have lots of trails and walks around the lake perfect for families, individuals and dog walking too! Also has a fantastic gift shop. Highly recommend.
Visited with a friend on a Sunday morning. Really enjoyed our visit around the gardens and the house, lots of interesting information and helpful volunteers. Hoping Nottingham City Council are able to "balance the books" in the future and are able to be in a position to restore parts of the gardens to their former glory.
A real mixed bag for our visit today - Though because we had our dogs we didn't actually get chance to tour the Abbey itself, but there is room for improvement in other areas.. The okay: £6 to park all day is very good value for money, and the grandeur and vista of the Abbey upon arrival is certainly stunning. The bad: After grabbing a not so quick coffee from the dreadfully understaffed deli 1 person manning it at lunchtime on Bank Holiday Monday, we set off with the dogs for a wander around the estate.. only to find that the walks and trails were very poorly signposted or marked out, and we ended up doubling back on ourselves twice - once because we ended up heading towards Newstead village, and once because the walking trail to the cannon fort and beyond actually comes to a very abrupt dead end, with no prior warning! There are also absolutely no poo or litter bins anywhere other than a handful around the cafe courtyard, so you either get stuck carrying rubbish around all day, or finding poo bag baubles hanging from every branch. The cafe was unfortunately a shambles - No hot food served after 2pm, all other food other than cakes was sold out, the coffee machine was broken, the staff were thoroughly disinterested, and the cafe itself looked like it hadn't been cleaned all weekend - we grabbed what turned out to be surprisingly good milkshakes and made a swift exit towards the grounds that surround the Abbey.. Which leads to the Good: The Spanish and Japanese Gardens are lovely, well maintained, well signposted, pleasant areas to meander around, great views of the lakes and the Abbey. Would I return? Unfortunately I don't think so, when you compare this to Clumber Park or Sandringham, which are similar venues at similar prices, Newstead falls behind in terms of just getting the basics right for your average, walking tourist looking for a day out
Amazing tours and well-maintained historical displays. Peacocks, multiple different gardens e.g., The Walled gardens, featuring waterfalls and a range of plants. Prices range greatly depending on whether you are walking, driving, or cycling into the grounds. Currently £2 entry for walking, a slight increase from being free years ago. Great for walking or cycling, and makes for amazing photographs.
Honestly a amazing beautiful place everyone should visit with amazing scenery and lots of history I would 100% tell everyone to visit this place and you won't be disappointedVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Visted here with my wife 4 children and granddaughter we enjoyed our few hour's spent here walking around taking in all the fantastic views and different types of areas to explore we even had a cuppa and ice cream. Was great exploring the gardens and grounds Lovely areas would definitely recommend for a relaxing half a day out. Look out for the peacock walking around they are stunning thank you
We didn’t go into the Abbey, but the gardens were lovely, well kept, can’t wait to see them in spring full of colour. The cafe was a nice quaint little place, reasonably priced and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Not sure prices for parking, as we walked here.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
I always love visiting the gardens here. Take a picnic and let the children enjoy the playground section. Do not, however, let your dog off leash. I was saddened to hear they lost arthur the peacock to a savage dog attack but was further upset to witness an off leash dog take off after geese today.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
