Great Sunday roast! All food was hot, freshly cooked and well presented. Friendly service from the staff. Furniture is a bit old and tired compared to other Vintage Inns I've visited but overall atmosphere was nice and cosy.
Firstly, the food was very good. Crispy Camembert Bites were lovely and my ribeye was cooked just right with a lovely beef dripping sauce and my wife absolutely loved her chicken and smoked pancetta pie. That's the good, now for the bad. Where it loses stars is the terrible service, not just for us but the other diners around us too. The staff were polite enough but lack training and supervision. The waitress struggled using her tablet, couldn't find wife's drink, saying it had all just changed. We struggled all night to get her attention. She never asked if things were okay and stood daydreaming most of the time, like she didn't want to be there and was just going through the motions. My wife asked for a second drink and after 20 mins waiting I had to ask where it was. The waitress apologised that it'd been forgotten, but then it took at least another 10 mins to finally arrive, by which time we'd finished eating. Cutlery was forgotten on the table next to us and then again for us, then just plonked on the table upside down. We spent a good 10 mins trying to get the bill, even though it wasn't busy. The interior is potentially lovely but tired and in need of a good spruce up. The toilets were in dire need of updating and not that clean, which is never a good sign. The search goes on for great food AND service. Shame really, because the chefs were obviously doing their job well.
We had the 3 course meal on a Saturday at 2.30pm. Service was excellent. Our order for drinks went in quickly and was delivered exactly as ordered. This usually never happens when we eat out. The soups were hot and tasty. The mains were very generous, hot and excellent value for money. Both courses were served quickly and with a smile. We were asked if we wanted to wait a while for desserts which we did. The desserts were generous portions and very nice. As some have mentioned in other reviews the decor is a little tired but the food and service more than made up for that. My only suggestion is that my three courses were the Vegan options and both the main and dessert were pastry based. This made the meal a bit on the heavy side. I was also happy that the Vegan options were not fake meat rubbish which I don't want when eating out. The dishes could have had a little more legumes in them but overall they were very good. I hope that we can return soon.
A busy Sunday lunchtime at the Nags Head with a good choice of roasts as well as the menu. The chicken pie was delicious. Friendly and attentive staff.
We enjoyed everything about our evening and thought the initial service was particularly excellent. The food was delicious and arrived in a timely manner. The only thing we would improve on was the fact the Black Forest Flowerpot wasn't available so perhaps we'll have to come back some time to try it!
We visited the Friday and just had drinks and found the place and staff very pleasant but we had booked a meal on the Saturday and it was dreadful. The whole restaurant area had a very annoying and rather loud droning sound which was explained as coming from the extractor fan in the kitchen. The waitress didn't take our order until requested to. She took the order and came back ten minutes later to say one of the starters was not available. Half an hour passed before she came back and announced that the second choice starter was not available either. goodness knows why that took so long. There were eight in the party and after one hour and ten minutes without any food we asked what the problem was and the waitress told us that the order had only gone in 14 minutes earlier. there was no explanation why that was. No one came round to ask if we wanted more drinks, again we had to ask. The starters arrived 1 hour and 15 minutes after we ordered! The food was not worth the wait. We did not want to tip the extremely poor service and noticed service charge was included. It would have been embarrassing to ask for it to be removed so reluctantly we paid. There was no apology for the delay in the food and we noticed other tables being served by another waiter received there's a good twenty minutes before us despite arriving after us. The problem did appear to be the waitress we had. Having found the bar staff to be pleasant the day before we remained for drinks after and again enjoyed the experience in that area. The restaurant was one of the worst that I have ever been to and the one point is for the bar, otherwise it would have been even worse.
We went for Sunday lunch on 23rd April. My partner, who requires a gluten-free menu, was informed that she couldn't have roast potatoes due to a new recipe. We've been many times previously and enjoyed eating there. However, it's safe to say we won't be going again. Who on earth thought covering roast potatoes in flour was a good idea is beyond me.
The Nags Head was cool on a very hot summer day. There was plenty of space inside to find a cool place to sit and enjoy a drink. Outside was a great meeting area for our group. Menu was good and interesting items to choose from. Prices were reasonable and food was very enjoyable. Served freshly prepared
Welcomed by a smiley chap behind the bar who we later found out was the manager, shown through to a table with space for our little one in a pram booked ahead! and service was faultless thereafter. Wonderful food and such a quaint little pub! Top job all round team!
Had a Christmas meal there with 16 friends. Staff were excellent except the chef, who served stones instead of roast potatoes. Nobody could even cut one. They did bring fresh ones but most had finished there meal before they arrived. Very poor chef to serve such food.
