Along with another company, we contacted N4 Gas about getting a boiler replaced. N4's engineer came over three days later and confirmed that the current one was beyond repair. Over the course of the next few days, we called them repeatedly about confirming a date and time for the job. They're just around the corner from us and we thought it would be good to use a local company where possible, so we declined the estimate and installation date from the other people who came to look at the boiler and decided to go with N4. Despite assuring me that they would return my calls asking for a confirmed installation date, N4 repeatedly failed to do so. I remained courteous throughout this time – as indeed did they, every time I called to see why my call hadn't been returned. However, you can only give the benefit of the doubt so many times when you've been repeatedly told that someone will try and contact the engineer and get back to you in the next few minutes. Throughout this time, we had no hot water, but we persevered and showed good faith for several days. It was only on the final day that it was explained to us that the difficulty so far in pencilling a date was that this would be a two-person job extending over two days and it was hard to find engineers who were free to do this over consecutive days. At no point prior to that conversation was I told that this was the reason – and I only mention this because rather than being kept in the dark, it's always nice to be told, so that you have some sort of understanding why it's taking so long to confirm a job. In the very final exchange I had with N4 for which the woman on the line described herself as the third in command, meaning that two of her colleagues tend to field most of the phone enquiries, I asked her to promise me that she would get back to me by the end of the day. That was Monday; I'm writing this on a Wednesday, and we've still heard nothing, so it's just as well that late that Monday, sensing that the writing was on the wall, we called the other company whose estimate we declined, apologised to them and asked them if they were still up for honouring that initial estimate – and they're coming to do the job next week. To anyone at N4, if you really do record all your calls for training purposes, feel free to play them back and tell me if I've been anything other than courteous and patient with you. I have to give a score here. I'm diplomatically going to give three stars because we didn't get as far as actually having our boiler replaced. But this whole experience was a little sad as I really wanted to use a reputable local firm and you made it impossible for me to do so.
N4 Gas have installed our replacement boiler during a kitchen refit in 2014, and have been out go to plumbers since. They are masters of taking on difficult jobs, which is especially true of servicing our boiler where it’s right at the back of a utility cupboard space, where the walls were built around the original boiler after it’s install in 2004. We continue to use them for our Annual Boiler service
I had booked a service with N4 Gas for my ageing Potterton boiler. Their service engineer arrived and firstly pointed out that I did not have proper ventilation to outside air . After several checks he stated that the boiler condition was poor with signs of fatigue. We then discussed replacing the boiler and hot water tank and he explained, that with the current regulations, the boiler would have to be re-sited and moving it up into the loft being the best option but a big job . He talked with his office and after taking lots of notes said someone would need to come round to finalize things and I would receive a quote in 2-3 days. He also put a 'danger do not use ' sticker on the boiler, pointing out this was a urgent matter. I did not receive a call back from them and finally I received a quote 6 weeks later so not a urgent matter to them . The quote itself was not detailed or fully explanatory. I would have expected someone to get in touch to discuss the quote. I can only assume that either the job was too big or they did not want the business, however it would have been courteous to let me know. Based on my experience of N4 Gas I would not recommend them to anyone.
Really nice company to do business with, they are small and can be a bit disorganised at times, however they are clearly trying and I have never been let down by the skills offered up by their engineers. Have used them several times for 3 of my properties for the past 5 years and never had any major issues. Appointments can be a bit frustrating to organise, however I blame this on their popularity and size. I regularly see chris and dan in the area and they always recognise me and say hi... I like the personal approach they offer and highly recommend them.
N4 have always solved any issue I have had especially on emergencies. Dave is one of the most competent plumbers I know. Could not rate him and his team highly enough.
