Museum Collections Centre

Story

The Museum Collection Centre in Nechells, Birmingham, England is a 1.5 hectare building that holds 80 per cent of Birmingham Museums Trust's stored collections under one roof. It is one of the UK's largest museum stores. Among the thousands of objects stored there are steam engines, sculptures, a collection of Austin, Rover and MG motor cars, a red phone box and a Sinclair C5.It opens to the public monthly, or by arrangement. There are also other open days, which tend to take place during the Spring and Summer Bank Holidays. The Museum Collection Centre is also home to The Museum in a Box service which enables schools and community groups to borrow original artefacts. In September 2014 trainee curator Lukas Large uncovered a taxidermied specimen of the long extinct North American passenger pigeon in the collection.

Fantastic place with thousands of objects, warehouse style. Highly recommend automobile section at the end. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Please note that it is open for public only on Fridays for 2 hours - 12:30-2:30.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
What a fantastic place. Visited for one of their open days and it was a great experience. So much to see. The staff were brilliant, very proud of their collection and so obviously want you to love it as well. The experts had so much time for you and again are loving sharing their knowledge. If, like me, you are not a big fan of interactive museum displays, this is the place for you. And they had cake!
We had an excellent afternoon at the Museum Collection Centre's annual free open day. We got to hold some 500,000 year old stone tools that were used for cutting up meat. We also went in a pop up planetarium. The collection is also open once a month on a Friday when you can view the main halls. I thoroughly recommend if you are fascinated by all sorts of old stuff.
It's an eclectic bunch of stuff which as a nosy person I adored.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
This is a fascinating place to visit. It contains such an eclectic collection ranging from various vehicles to sculptures. Items are displayed in a most random basis but this seems to make the visit so much more interesting. I was there for over 2 hours and will certainly pay another visit before too long.
I had such a great time visiting the museum collection. It has so many artefacts and you feel transported to different eras as you wonder in the different aisles. Very friendly and welcoming staff.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure

Amazing day brought back lots of memories of the science museum. Staff were so helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks to heritage week for opening the doors
This was like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark except all the crates are open. Absolutely amazing place. So many preserved machines, appliances, vehicles, statuary, furniture....just endless amounts of stuff to look at. Highly recommend it.
