Visiting from California and just such a lovely cafe!nn* They have magazines/newspapers on a stand that you can peruse while you eat.n* Cozy interior design!n* Wifi is available.n* Food is DELICIOUS and well seasoned! Highly recommend the Spicy Hash.n* They are a small cafe so please be patient with the servers and baristas. They have limited space so queue kindly!
I was really disappointed with my recent visit to FIKA. I ordered the Lotus Biscoff pancakes, which should come with Biscoff sauce and toppings, but when they arrived there was no Biscoff drizzle and no icing sugar on top. Nobody informed me that they had run out of ingredients before serving the dish.nnWhen I asked about the missing Biscoff sauce, I was offered Nutella as a replacement. However, the Nutella wasn’t even melted and was simply added on top, which wasn’t a suitable substitute for what I had originally ordered. If ingredients are unavailable, customers should be told beforehand and given the choice to order something else.nnWe also ordered a hot chocolate to take away, but it barely tasted like hot chocolate at all. It was more like hot milk with very little chocolate flavour. In fact, when I got home, I had to add my own chocolate just to give it some flavour and make it taste like an actual hot chocolate, which is not something I should have had to do after paying for one.nnWhat disappointed me most was the way my concerns were handled. When I politely asked about the missing toppings, I felt like I wasn’t being treated as a valued customer and my complaint wasn’t taken seriously.nnOverall, the food and drinks did not match what was advertised, there was a lack of communication about unavailable ingredients, and the customer service left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, this experience has put me off returning.
I’ve been coming to Fika for around two years and almost always ordered the same thing, the grilled halloumi, because it was consistently good. I hadn’t visited for about six months, but today’s experience was genuinely disappointing and felt like a noticeable drop in standards.nnThe café itself looked scruffy and tired. Chairs were falling apart and the paintwork was dirty and grubby, which immediately gave the impression that corners are being cut.nnWhen I went to order, the waitress, a Scottish lady, was pouring milk into a jug behind the counter. I stood and waited politely, at which point she said “I’ll get to you when I can” in a way that made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a customer. I then asked, “Oh sorry, do you come to the table now?” and was told bluntly, “No, you come to me.” I actually ended up apologising for taking up her time, which really should not happen in a hospitality setting.nnI paid £14.30 for the grilled halloumi. I order this dish specifically because it usually comes with a generous and excellent chilli sauce. This time the sauce was almost non existent. I asked if it was possible to have a little more and explained that there was usually much more than this. I was told I could, but it would cost an extra 50p. Out of principle, I declined and said I simply would not be coming back.nnWhen another waitress cleared my plate and asked if everything was ok, I explained that it wasn’t. The halloumi was barely grilled and the sauce was almost absent. There was no apology, just “I’ll tell them in the kitchen.”nn£14.30 for a piece of toast with avocado hummus, two poached eggs and a few small pieces of halloumi is already a stretch in Cockermouth. I had always justified it because the food used to be good. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.nnA real shame, but I won’t be returning.
