Story

Medway Maritime Hospital treats around 400,000 patients each year mainly in Medway and Swale, but increasingly other parts of North and West Kent too. Everyday we see around 1,400 outpatients, about 250 patients use our emergency department and approximately 150 patients need to be admitted for hospital care and treatment.

The range of specialist services we offer have grown over recent years, as have the communities we serve, bringing to Medway services which in the past, patients have had to travel miles for. This includes the cardiac catheter suite, West Kent Vascular Centre, West Kent Centre for Urology, a dedicated stroke unit and the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit.

A and E was terrible. Took my child to the emergency department and was told to wait in the waiting area. The area had no windows and had one table in the middle with colouring pencils...yet no paper. It was dirty and after waiting for 2 and a half hours I was finally seen by a nurse who put the torch on her phone and examined him. I was then told yes he needs to be seen by a Dr and to make my way around to meddoc. I got there and was told that I need to wait at least another 3 hours. Got to 10pm and decided to leave after being told the waiting time is still 3 hours. Child's waiting room was very dirty with dirty tissues and food over the floor. On the other hand, I cannot fault their intensive care units. Have had great experiences with them.
The worst hospital you can ever stay in! Avoid as a plague. Non empathetic or interested receptionists... 3 there staring and doing nothing. I am 39+5 weeks pregnant coming at 15:40, waiting until 19:30 and then I left
My elderly father was admitted 5 times in 18 months , 4 of which were result of blue light runs in ambulance. Each time sent home in pain and distress with no action no follow up and told put up with it. Long Story short . Finally had the required op after GP letter and intervention. Dealings with the hospital have been diabolical. Refusal to answer phone. Redirection to incorrect numbers. Contradicting information. Made to feel more like a production line in a factory than a hospital! It was only when I started to ask certain questions illustrating I had a little knowledge of procedure and patient rights that any progress was made. I hope my family NEVER. has the misfortune to have to experience this place again.
I have had many different experiences over the years with this hospital, not always good. I have to say though that through my cancer treatment they have been brilliant, the breast care unit has been fantastic. They are always at the end of the phone and when they say they are going to call back they do.
It’s 7pm in the evening as I’m writing this. The hospital have phoned less than 12 hours before to cancel my partners operation without reason. This operation was supposed to solve my partners debilitating mobility condition. As well as the above I was spoken to by a surgeons representative who was outright the most abusive and inconsiderate human I have ever come across and his behaviour was disgusting so much to the fact he refused to give me his name so that his behaviour could be reported. Avoid this hospital like the plague. Abusive staff members who think it’s acceptable to literally scream down the phone at a Paitent.
We are full of praise at this hospital. A&E, staff Pembroke were brilliant and also with Ocelot ward. Cannot fault anyone. My wife broke her hip hence our praise.
Dear Penguin Ward Short of words to describe how caring and professional were the staff on night shift last night! We had a tough night with our two year olds temp shooting up and coughing badly. We were exhausted after the long wait in elsewhere stop overs!!! My children were more worried they wouldn't be home when Santa brings them presents. We never had to deal with a Christmas eve this way and we were sad. But, the caring staff at Penguin Ward made my children relax and gave them presents as well. Santa comes, sometimes, disguised in a Nurse's uniform. THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH.....NOT JUST FOR THE ASSESSMENT AND ANTIBIOTICS, BUT FOR SHARING THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS WITH US!
The Medway Maritime Hospital is a worse hospital, I have ever seen. British Public should know where are all those money are going? How much wages are being paid for running the Hospital in such an unefficiently? Every time you go and will find out they are short of staff and waiting time is above 5 hours. You will be walking around from one department to another department and every time you have to wait. They think people are stupid, they are trying to show on paper that patients are getting treatment within 3 to 4 hours but not showing referred to different place for treatment and have to wait again from the beginning.
Emerald Ward short Stay The Worst ward to get anyone on Phone if you want to check on love ones, when one cant visit. Phone will be answered after 10 to 15 attempts. When you do visit there always someone on nurse's station , but trying calling on phone Its a night mare
I am absolutely disgusted in the way we’ve been treated! Late evening 23rd December my daughter came ill, early hours Christmas Eve I called 111 and an ambulance was called out for my 8 month old daughter. Was taken to children medoc and was sent home with nasal drops and told to carry on with calpol. We went home and had Christmas and Boxing Day she still wasn’t great so we come back. She was then admitted for Bronchiolitis, had a fever and needed oxygen. She had a few nebulisers and had a bit of oxygen. We thought we was staying over night but sent us home at 1 o’clock in the morning. By 10 o’clock that morning we was back with difficulty breathing. They put us on a bed for two hours with no obs, nebulisers or oxygen. Not offered food or drink for 24 hours by staff! She was then put on it and admitted and have been here 4 days. She got told it was pneumonia. I asked for an X-ray but was told no and that she didn’t need antibiotics. But on the 29th another doctor came round and said she needed these. My partner has stayed with me for a few nights no problem and now they have decided to come in at 23:57 at night saying once of us has got to at midnight and that we’ve got away with it and that we NEED to go. She was very rude about this and didn’t even ask politely. Baring in mind my partner doesn’t have he’s car at the minute and it’s freezing cold outside. Disgusted in our whole experience!!!
