Story

Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa is situated in the charming village of Matfen in the heart of rural Northumberland. It is the ancestral home of Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett, who have lovingly restored the building into one of the finest hotels in the North East.

Golf- A 27 hole championship course, par 3 course and driving range (please check website for seasonal opening times).

Aqua Vitae Spa- treatments available (Saturday- Wednesday 10am-6pm, Thursday and Friday 10am-7pm) spa facilities including a 16 metre pool, Jacuzzi, aromatherapy room, sauna, steam room, ice fountain, monsoon shower and fully equipped Techno Gym (Open Monday- Friday 6:30am-10pm, Saturday and Sunday 6:30am-9pm, Children’s Times: 10am-12pm, 4pm-7pm daily)

Our Library Restaurant has been awarded two AA rosettes and offers a fine dining experience in a traditional setting. Serving afternoon tea 2.30pm – 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, 4pm – 5.30pm Sunday. Bookings for evening dinner available 6:30pm-9pm daily.

We arrived for afternoon tea. There was plenty of seating and the portions were generous. My partner particularly enjoyed the 'gentleman's afternoon tea' option and very much delighted in the classic afternoon tea. The staff were attentive and we had a lovely afternoon with some nice views.

Just returned home from Matfen Hall having had a wonderful Sunday lunch as a party of four. Very attentive staff and delicious food. I would have no hesitation in recommending Matfen Hall for luch or afternoon tea.

Absolutely loved it! Spent the weekend with my husband and we both enjoyed the place (we had a huge room and fantastic view); great food and great service. If you plan to use the spa make sure you book as early as possible.

The place and meals were excellent. We stayed 3 nights. On the third the chief sent us a special menu as we had chosen twice from the original one. We thought it was very thoughtful of him.

Beautiful place and gardens. Undergoing an updating but I'm not sure contemporary is the right direction? Pool is nice thou surroundings could do with refreshing. Sauna and steam room are adequate but the ice bowl and cold water bucket are pointless ..as for the 'nothing' room...I've yet to find anyone who either knows what it is for or actually likes it. Rooms are fab especially in the original house. Food in the Library is lovely and there has been a change of chef recently and thats been noticable. We often eat in the Keeper's Lodge where the staff and chef are very friendly and helpful and who serve wonderful food too. Food in the conservatory and pool bar is overpriced and sparse. Overall we love the place and have done for many years. It's like a comfortable pair of shoes.
