Stayed at the tower for 3 nights and while it was a unique experience, I would not stay again. Yes, the tower itself is beautiful and you have excellent views of the sea, sunset, and 2 ladders for beach access. Interior is lovely and mixes historic with modern. However, after booking online nearly 4 months in advance and paying a deposit, the confirmation email told me I would be charged 6 weeks prior to my stay. With a week left before my stay, I still had not been charged. I emailed several times and never got a response so I frantically called the number listed and was told that they would charge my card and share checkin information with me that afternoon….but that didn’t happen until after 8pm. I was told somebody would meet me at 4pm for checkin but the day prior to checkin that changed and was told that I would have to retrieve the key from the lockbox. There was no explanation of how to enter the tower, how to get to the tower or anything! The taxi driver we had refused to take us down the narrow dirt road because it is a hiking path. Only after we hiked with all of our luggage down the .3 mile road and eventually got into the tower did we find a binder that explained the road could be used for visitors at the tower and emergency vehicles only. Getting in was a nightmare and after trying both doors with the lock, we had to spend money calling the owners again and asking how to get in. They explained you have pull the door toward you and twist the key in a specific way. They then hung up on me before I could even ask which door I needed to use to get into the tower. Once we were finally in, we were happy that we could relax. As I said, there are many modern touches which is fantastic. Taking the original stairwell up to the kitchen on the third floor should/can only be done by those without disability, so keep that in mind before booking it is also listed on the website. When we got in and finally settled, we tried to connect to the WiFi, but it was not listed. The binder claimed we needed the router but we searched all over and could not find it. I had to pay again to contact the owner. To save a bit of money I texted and to their credit they did call a few minutes later but I missed the call. He then texted and told me where I could find the router on the top floor in a window, not plugged in. No clue why. We eventually got it plugged in and were able to get connected so we could let our family and friends know we arrived safely. The stay thereafter was fine. We just told all of our taxi drivers that they were allowed to use the dirt road. We only found one restaurant willing to deliver to the tower Brezzi’s Pizza but they were not pleased that there is no actual address for the tower it only pulls up as “Red Rock Road” so they had trouble locating us. The tower itself is set far back from everything else in Sutton/Howth so if you don’t bring your own car, expect to spend about 80€ a day on taxis to and from Dublin or about 50€ a day for taxis to and from Howth. The tower is also off of a public hiking route, so we had a LOT of curious hikers walk up to the tower through the driveway gate, walk up the stairs, and peek in windows or stroll around the balcony. It was very unsettling, especially as it was just us three women there. Despite being behind 10 foot walls, we did not feel very safe! The curious visitors were there despite a sign saying the tower is private property but it is sort of hidden by a tree and the metal fence in front of the driveway it doesn’t lock and the fence and concrete wall are hip height so you can easily hop it. When it was finally time to check out, we were not given any checkout information, so I had no idea what to do and was tired of asking the owners so we did what we hoped they’d want in terms of putting the key away and such. Again, it’s beautiful and I enjoyed having the opportunity for the experience, but I would not stay again. Rooms: Two modest sized rooms which are decorated nicely and two oversize couches in the living room but there are rules saying you cannot sleep on the couches. The first room has an American queen sized bed and the second room has an American full sized bed pushed up against a wall. Nearby activities: Nothing. The closest town is Sutton where you can get on the Dart to Dublin or Howth. Safety: There are 2 entry doors with just a bolted lock. The driveway gate does not lock and the fences can be hopped. There are motion activated floodlights outside. A sign saying private property is affixed to the driveway wall but you have to search for it. This means curious/nosy hikers can and will enter the premises. Walkability: The tower is off a public hiking trail that goes around the city of Howth. You can hike approximately 2 hours to get to Howth but beyond that there’s nothing in walking distance. Food & drinks: Nothing nearby or within walking distance. Only one place was willing to deliver pizza. Noteworthy details: Do not rely on the owners for assistance during your stay. Be prepared for strangers coming onto the property and looking around.
A beautiful spot to see the sunset from and a nice walk, never overly crowded :Location: 5/5
We stayed in the Martello Tower for three nights earlier this month. Amazing place with beautiful views. We had a storm the first night and enjoyed the sounds from within the tower. The second day, we hiked to Howth Harbour and back, which was much fun. Recommend Summit Inn for lunch or dinner and The House for breakfast. My wife has wanted to stay here for years, and the experience was well worth it. Highly recommend booking directly through their website.
Beautiful scenery around the area including cliff walks and sea. Tower itself is private so not allowed walk around the structure. You can book to stay there if you have deep pockets. No parking in the general area for public although there is a massive unused field that is perfect for parking behind the tower that is used for nothing!
Just went for a small walk around Martello Tower it was a beautiful day .Location: 5/5
Have not stayed in the tower but there is a fantastic sea walk, no traffic sounds. This walk goes to the summit for those who love walking this is a must. THIS SPOT IS ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES
Peaceful, secluded, different and beautifully decorated inside. Historical landmark where you can stay and experience nature at its best.A short walk, bus or drive to Sutton town or Howth village. One of the most memorable places we have stayed in the world.
If you like hill walking this is a good place to start to walk the Howth head and back is close to 10Km. On a sunny day brink you flask and sandwich and it is really enjoyable scenery
The area and walk is Beautiful. If you're lucky enough to stay in the Martello Tower...... The views to Wicklow over Dublin Bay are breathtaking.
Climb the steep hill to the Martello tower . Visit the Radio museum interesting stuff. The view over the harbour is so nice
