It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments. The building faces Albert Square to the north, featuring the Albert Memorial and St Peter's Square to the south, home to The Cenotaph.Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, the town hall was completed in 1877. The building contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with Ford Madox Brown's imposing Manchester Murals illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 280ft and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. A member of staff was extremely helpful in FM regarding my ID pass. I think her name was either June or Jane, thanks.
Really beautiful hall steeped in local history and a great place to host an event. We had the company Christmas party here and it was excellent. The food was cooked to perfection and served by great staff with the kind of precision and care you don't often see these days. Even posh Aunt Mabel wont be disappointed!
City Hall is exceptionally impressive with many historic art works, numerous 'mansion like' meeting rooms, statues, marble columns and the list goes on! There is a cafe on the ground floor. Highly recommended if you are in Manchester and you are up for some history... hurry though because it closes Christmas 2017 for a minimum of 5 years whilst it is refurbished.
Just taken part in a grand tour of the Gothic styled Manchester Town Hall. Built by Thomas Waterhouse and decorated externally with the three symbols of God; the trinity of windows reaching up to the sky, Man; the various statues of men and woman and Earth. Floral decorations adorning the walls. On top of the spire is a golden cotton flower in homage to the Cotten products and mills. A must to see are the twelve panels painted by Ford Madox Brown found in the main hall.
One of my favourite place in England. It’s really nice and beautiful building. You should check it out. Grab a cup of coffee and just sit on the beach a front of the hall and just relax. Your day will be good. I strongly recommend you this Town hall! Have a lovely day
Very beautiful land mark. Unfortunately the day I went visited it there were a lot of construction and renovation in the area. Lovely people and restaurants in the surroundings. I highly recommend visiting it during the holiday seasons
I often saw many tourist, of recent chinese visitors taking pictures of Manchester city council and the town centre. Manchester is a great place to visit and live, the central library, post office, KPMG building, University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Police enquiry office, Manchester United Football Club are nearby including hotels. The Manchester councils also host many events and christmas shows, tram and buses are often used to travel within manchester with free internet and at affordable prices.
Great building, nice place to get rest with a lot of benches, but unfortunately it will be close by 2024.
I'm Yun from Korea. I lost my bike in Manchester but many people did donate for me. I am now in Argentina. I want to talk about donations. First of all, thank you to those who sent me donations. With the help of many people Nick has collected 3535 pounds, and ukmtp has collected 667 pounds. ukmtp sent me a donation 667 pounds. I was assisted by Lee Hindle. And when it was deposited into my account, the money was transferred to Lee Hindle's account. I can not speak English well. When I buy things I need to travel, Lee will buy them. But there was a problem. We used 2372 pounds to buy bikes from donations. And Nick bought camping equipment. The problem is that the remaining money is still on Lee Hindle's bankbook. The total donation is 4202 pounds3535 + 667. I have been worried for a long time. And I wrote this because I thought I should inform the people who sent me the donation. Thanks again to those who gave me a donation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, Mayor, I am a Korean who has lost my bike, I can continue my journey with the help of the mayor of Manchester and many friends. Although I lost my bike, it was an honor to be able to experience the UK as a country of gentlemen. Thanks again to the mayor and friends for their help.
