Story

Lydiard Park is the ancestral home of the Viscounts Bolingbroke. The Palladian house, Walled Garden, formal parkland and surrounding pasture are the striking remains of a great country estate, which reached its peak in the 18th century.

Inside Lydiard House, you can wander through the elegant State Rooms, where ornate plasterwork and original family furnishings are displayed alongside portraits of the St John family, who lived here from Elizabethan times. The Walled Garden is a rare example of a Georgian ornamental fruit and flower garden with seasonal displays of beautiful flowers, fruit trees and topiary.

A very well maintained park with interesting features, coffee shop, history, historic house, garden and church, lake and wooded areas, large open fields great for dogs, walking, cycling, running etc., seems to have become more and more commercialised, as more and more houses are built in the area, it seems less council tax goes to the park, with more paid activities, hotel, conferences etc., it seems less of a community area. We use to meet colleges there for coffee and catch up, however since the charge for parking a few years back, we meet elsewhere, with up to 5 cars a day x 5 days is was £50 a week extra just to have a coffee with colleges, with coffee and snacks and parking, it makes for an expensive hour. So IMO, another great community place, being lost to commercialism, however still worth 3 *s as £4 to park all day is good value if you want to stay all day and have a BBQ, Picnic, enjoy open air activities etc. However it was free to the community when I was growing up, hence the amount of use did not depend on your wallet size.

Great place to visit, i used to go 5 days a week. I would have gave it 5 star but with the cost of parking, dogs on a lead most of the time and they dont offer the best facility's. Look around the area as free places offer more and you save some pennies.

*Accommodation* Relatively comfortable in the sense that the beds are okay and offer a decent night's sleep. Unfortunately, when you compare this hotel to others nearby at similar prices, it doesn't match up. We bought an air freshener to get rid of the stale, stuffy air and I'm confident in saying that an average person's bedroom would look cleaner and more up-to-date. The bathroom was okay, the toilet and bath were clean but it is tight for space if you are tall plus the shower is a cheap add-on and the water temperature was inconsistent. I was really looking forward to an interesting stay on a pretty estate but was left feeling disappointed and apologetic to my other half. The booking sites really don't show the accommodation as it really is. Having said all that, the staff were friendly and the pool looked reasonable, which gives it an extra star. The two key points are it needs a major update and needs to be advertised properly. P.s. First floor and above are stairs only.

One of the best parts of Swindon. Great for walks, runs, picnics, walking the dog or just chilling with friends. There is a small cafe
