We didn’t know what to expect given the mixed reviews but had a brilliant meal at King William. The pub itself is beautiful with exposed beams, open fire roaring and pretty fairy lights across the ceiling. Service was friendly and attentive. Fillet of beef was cooked perfectly, dessert was delicious and wonderfully presented. Plenty of parking out back and views over the countryside. Also the only place I’ve been with Mad Squirrel’s, ‘Zealous’ lager on tap. Can’t wait to visit again!
We have visited the King William on several occasions since Carol and Alex took it over. Initially for drinks and recently for dinner. The beer is kept splendidly and the food is exceptionally good. The staff are friendly, efficient, professional and helpful. This must have been a herculean task to rescue the King William from the carnage left by the previous landlord. The King William is now a very pleasant place to visit for relaxing drinks and high quality food, we shall be visiting regularly.
The decor in this pub is without doubt the best in the area but the prices were more than the Fox And Hounds which others in the area told us were expensive. Worth a visit but you’ll be paying London prices. £15 for a Guinness and Gin & Lemonade. Only £10 down the road at The Pheasant for the same round.
This pub has recently been taken over by a new Landlady and its lovely to have it back open and running again and I have to say that anyone familiar with this pub in the 'old days of Liz' will be pleased to know that the standards of the pub have been set this high once again. The food was a delight, I had one of the specials which was the Loin of Lamb with dauphinoise potatoes and my husband had the Rack of Ribs with coleslaw and fries, our friends also had the ribs. The menu has the good old classics but ramped up slightly, all food is freshly cooked. You have to try the blueberry panna cotta!! Literally to die for! Our waitress was a lovely cheerful young lady who looked after us at all times very professional. We had the best meal and are looking forward to returning very soon. Thank you King William!
The King William is now under new ownership. Please ignore all reviews from 2022 and before. Saturday 6th march we went for dinner on their opening night . The A la carte dinner was amazing, accompanied by great wine with good service. At present they have a great pint of Adnams available at the bar with several largers as well. We wish them all luck for the future and will be back very soon .
I absolutely love this pub If you have never been before you must visit. Food is delicious staff are friendly cosy quirky warm and friendly Cant wait to return!
We knew the place from previous life and it had amazing home cooked meals. We went again without realising that things have changed and it wasn't a great experience. The service was good but good was not even ok, chips were not crispy and my children even said that school ones are a lot better. Fish and chip with very dark batter... a disaster. It was also expensive for what we ate. It looked like it is not looked after also, a blister with tablets in one table, high pressure machine near the tables... a disappointment
This is a beautiful old village pub with a lovely log fire right in the middle of the building. On our visit the service was a little chaotic, but that was down to new and inexperienced staff. They were still very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We had the Sunday roast with pork and crackling and nut-roast for the vegetarians. The food was simply outstanding. Generous portions, with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and a host of delicious vegetables. While nut-roast may lack originality, I'm assured that it too was delicious. Everything was topped off with a beautiful rich gravy. Sadly our visit was quite short, with no time for starters or dessert, but we'll definitely back to sample more of the superb food. If you're in the area, you should definitely give the King William IV a try.
Booked two rooms to stay. Checked in, were given no info on check in about check out times, where to put keys etc. dropped our bags off and left. In the morning, we couldn’t get a taxi after calling several ranks. We checked the pub 3 times over the course of the morning and still no one was there. We sat in our rooms with our doors open and bags packed when a car pulled into the car park and straight away a greasy looking and dirty chef got out of the car and started shouting at us. He swore and called us stupid for not just leaving the keys in the doors and vacating. Tried to explain that we were trying to get a taxi this was 11:50am and had no way to get back to our car. He didn’t care and then started shouting that we needed to pay an extra £30 because there were 3 of us and not 2 of us even though we had booked and paid for two rooms. Apparently for two people in one room is an extra £30. They guy that checked us in saw that there were 3 of us and nothing was said. I wasn’t aware that it was per person and not per room, which is ridiculous. Are we paying for the privilege of oxygen or a room? We were also hanging around to have food in the pub. The women who was with the chef said she came to see us to tell us we had only paid for two people and not 3, but we had already left. We had left our contact number with the guy on the bar so they could have easily called us and we would have sorted out the problem there and then. She also saw us when we checked in as we asked if the rooms had been cleaned and were ready for us to check in. Do not recommend staying here and I certainly wouldn’t eat here after seeing the chefs whites were black, dirty and greasy. The chef himself looked equally unwashed. He was aggressive . The staff were rude and Unorganised. Do not stay here
All in all a bit of a mixed review meant with best intentions. Stayed overnight in one if the rooms in car park, basic but ok but u would add that it was fortunate that it was quiet. Parking was no issue, tea an coffee in the room, probably some maintenance needed as I had a struggle in working the temperature control on the shower. Had dinner in the pub, claimed all food was fresh and home cooked which I am a bit sceptical of. Pub had about 6 tables in all night and the landlady said thus was a good night. The place in of the beaten track in a village which is fine but very little footfall. I felt the price if food was high, started 7 and 8 pounds and very small portions for the price. Mains were standard in my opinion as we're the desserts. The tables in one section looked very old fashioned. I don't see how the pub can survive as a business without a rethink, it needs to reinvent itself and become known for a speaciality where people seek to go to rather than just in passing. Would I stay again if down that way, well I would try other places first and that's not say the staff or management were bad it's just an option that i did not leave thinking that I would definitely rebook and dismiss other venues.
