Kilmartin Museum

Story

Kilmartin Glen is an area in Argyll not far from Kintyre, which has one of the most important concentrations of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in Scotland. The glen is located between Oban and Lochgilphead, surrounding the village of Kilmartin. There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village, with 150 of them being prehistoric. Monuments include standing stones, a henge monument, numerous cists, and a "linear cemetery" comprising five burial cairns. Several of these, as well as many natural rocks, are decorated with cup and ring marks. The remains of the fortress of the Scots at Dunadd, a royal centre of Dal Riata, are located to the south of the glen, on the edge of the Moine Mhòr or Great Moss. The Kilmartin House Museum of Ancient Culture is located within the village itself, and aims to interpret the rich history of the glen. The linear cemeteryThe most visible feature of the Kilmartin Glen is the linear arrangement of cairns, running over three miles south-by-south-west from the village. There are five remaining cairns in the alignment, although cropmarks and other traces suggest that there may originally have been more. The burial cairns are of Bronze Age origin, with the exception of Nether Largie South cairn, which is a Stone Age structure, rebuilt in the Bronze Age.

The church is pretty with stunning Celtic artifacts to be found in and around the grave yard. The museum cafe is OK, but not dog friendly. My personal favourites, the Temple Wood stone circle and near by Nether Large standing stones are amazing! Scotland's Dalriada stone henge in scenic surrounds??? 3000 BC is way too difficult for me to comprehend.

Good, informative museum, excellent site for walking around the cairns and standing stones. It was good to see that the cafe is back on track after a couple of visits last year.

Fascinating walk around the cairns and museum. The smell of coffee and cake makes the cafe very tempting.

This is an outstanding museum. Although the building may be small, the amount of information and artifacts attractively and informatively displayed is impressive, and the incredible history in the surrounding landscape is stunning. This is an excellent family museum, perfect for kids as young as 6 or 7, and for all ages above. All of our party (ages 10, 16, 19, 44 and 45) very much enjoyed the hands-on displays that added to the full context of the exhibits. The cafe is really top-notch and the gift shop is lovely. I'd put this on par with the National Museum of Scotland, just highly focused and most of the things to see are in the landscape outside, which again makes it appealing for families! My one wish is that there was a guidebook to buy similar to those at Urquhart Castle, to consult as we walked the landscape and carry home with us after.
