Story

The Jolly Sportsman is situated on a quiet, no-through lane in rural East Chiltington, Sussex by the South Downs, 20 mins from Brighton. Since 1998 it has been run by Bruce Wass who was the Chef / Proprietor of the highly acclaimed Thackerays House restaurant in Tunbridge Wells.

Bruce is back in the kitchen with Anthony Masters our new Head chef who joins us from Drakes of Brighton. Kate Howard as Restaurant Manager. We aim is to serve good reliably sourced food in a relaxed setting where you can enjoy a bar snack and a pint of local ale or a three course meal with fine wine from our very extensive list.

After a member of our party fouled up making the booking on Boxing Day, the front of house team were very accommodating, they found us space and gave us a wonderful experience. All of the meals tasted lovely, and were well presented, especially the risotto Nero with grilled squid and scallops. The vegetarian main of leek tart wasn't quite hot through, but tasted fine all the same and the kitchen was perfectly happy to warm the item. The decor is charming and we'll chosen, and the space for the pub is well used. Staff are knowledgeable about the drinks selection and are keen to help.

Went on a sunday and there was only 1 vegetarian option - which was a very small portion of gnocchi (like 12 pieces!) - compared to the roasts which were good, it seemed like they had made no effort whatsoever. If your going to have 1 veggie option you need to at least make an effort . Although the meat options were nice and tasty it did still feel exspensive. Not enough green's with the roast in my opinion.

Great atmosphere, lovely food. Excellent selection of whiskies. Premium prices but worth it.

Took friends to our secret haunt and we weren't disappointed. Wonderful deep tasting boulibaise soup, perfectly delivered pork belly, excellent gurnard (local from Newhaven fishermen) and succulent and pink duck. The love and deep tasting sauces comes through on every plate. Clean plates all round ... And mustn't forget to mention wonderful service from Kate and Rob who know their craft well 👍
