I had to claim UC after a layoff which required attending here once a week. I felt like I’d gone back in time thirty years. This place is a wretched hive of parochial, patronising, sexist, sneering, and condescending attitudes you didn’t think existed anymore. They offer you no help or support: they want to bully you into taking the most punitively menial jobs possible so they tick their boxes and meet their quotas. My very first time in here, they told me I should be scrubbing toilets! The women in here most of whom are well past their sell-by date are particularly horrible to other women: they can’t comprehend any woman who has not spent her career doing entry-level clerical and secretarial work, so they try to harangue you into dumbing yourself down to those jobs no matter how many decades of serious professional experience you have on your CV. One of those women also suggested that I could deal with the stress of unemployment if I “get another partner” - she actually said this! As for the men they are just the worst of sneering parochial “who do you think you are?” attitudes, and mansplain your own life and career to you with a smirk on their faces when they’ve known you for two minutes. These people are not there to help you get a job, they’re there to wage psychological war on you until you break. Don’t break, and get out of here as soon as possible - without their help.
Completely awful, do everything in their power to keep you out of work so they can keep charging you money for phone calls while you're on hold for over an hour because you had a simple inquiry to ask them.
