JJ's Café -Malaysian @ Heaton Road, Newcastle Halal Mamak Mee Goreng, Pasembur, Teh Tarik.. Whalaoo… and all at affordable prices more than HALF the normal prices, because of the location being out of the city centre As a born-and-bred Malaysian, I couldn't be happier than to come across Malaysian food in the UK. The moment I tasted the cuisine in JJ's Café, the Malaysian 'Wok-Hei' was evident. ‍‍JJ and Sundre, both from Malaysia, have been running this café for over 23 years, in this exact location. Sundre, the chef, has already been running a Malaysian Street Food stall prior to the move to Newcastle. The appearance of the café may not be dazzling, but that adds to the authenticity of this spot - how this café has gracefully aged through the years. The Mamak Mee Goreng was spot-on. Wok-Hei. Spicy. Strong with Malaysian Flavours. Generous amounts of Tofu which we both love. I enjoyed it so much. Back in my hometown Penang Island, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to Mee Goreng. The drought of such cuisine here made this Mamak Mee Goreng incredible. What would have completed the whole dish, however, are small strips of lettuce and 'limau' a lime wedge for presentation and taste. Nevertheless, it was incredibly delicious. The Rojak Pasembur - my favourite dish of all. I have friends here ordering this particular dish every single week. After trying it, I'd understand why. The fried savoury fritters complemented by the peanut sauce, tofu, cucumbers, and egg.. Just incredible. Michelle and I LOVED the curries. We had egg curry, and Manchurian Cauliflower. I'm not trying to sugar-coat this, but the Manchurian Cauliflower even surpasses the standards of some Indian Restaurants I've been to in Kuala Lumpur. By far, the curries here were closest to home I've ever had in the UK. Everything served here is rich and spicy. Oh, and the Teh Tarik was lovely. Clearly, appearance and decor isn't the forte of JJ's Malaysian Café. I, however, would forgo that any time, simply because of the authenticity of the cuisine, and the prices here which are so worth it, and the fact that JJ and Sundre are also such lovely people.
Had a Just Eat delivery from here, arrived with in the time and still hot also well packaged! I ordered the Fish Curry Melt in the mouth pieces of fish in a spicy rich sauce, the Chicken Varuwal Tender chicken cubes in a sorta rich spiced sauce with loads of onions this was tasty too and Rojak Pasumpur which was like deep fried sorta bread with salad, satay sauce and a side of some sorta slaw it was all nice, ive not been to Malaysia but if i had i would probs say this was authentic, cant wait to order again.. very nice indeed
Definitely my favourite place for authentic Malaysian food in Newcastle. I love the Nasi Lemak, Lamb curry and the Thali. Definitely try the Thali! everything is freshly made Vegetarian options: plenty of vegetarian options
Perfect place if you’re looking for the Malaysian mamak vibes in Newcastle. I got nasi goreng kampung best seller and milo ice. The nasi goreng is a killer with crispy anchovies from Malaysia and would highly recommend if you like spicy food . The owner also suggested to try the chicken rice and mee goreng both are bestsellers as well
Been craving the complex, fragrant, tasty flavours of Malaysian cuisine since visiting the country. This place delivers authentic, incredible flavoursome dishes at really really good value. Fed 4 people for under £30.
This is by far the most authentic and delicious Malaysian/Indian takeaway place I have tried in Newcastle. Very reasonably priced food, great portion sizes, fantastic flavour. Vegetarian options: Lots of veggie options
The best place to eat in Newcastle authentic Malaysian food absolute Dietary restrictions: Halal
If you miss asian food malaysia, Indonesia and Thai. Come to this place! Its not pricey.. So super worth it! It near bykers. And it is open at 4 p.m. unfortunately, due to the covid situation, we cant eat dine in.. But the owner was really kind. He gave us the chair and table outside Its better.
This was one of the best dishes I had in Newcastle! Amazing amazing! And for very good price.
Great food served in unpretentious surroundings. This place is all about the food. A great menu with ample choice of Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine. Management very friendly. Take your own alcohol. This establishment is also a takeaway very reasonably priced too. So if you're after a great foodie experience without the Instagram posers then this is the destination.
