Imperial War Museum

Story

Imperial War Museum Duxford is a branch of the Imperial War Museum near Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England. Britain's largest aviation museum, Duxford houses the museum's large exhibits, including nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels in seven main exhibition buildings. The site also provides storage space for the museum's other collections of material such as film, photographs, documents, books and artefacts. The site accommodates several British Army regimental museums, including those of the Parachute Regiment (named Airborne Assault) and the Royal Anglian Regiment.Based on the historic Duxford Aerodrome, the site was originally operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. During the Second World War Duxford played a prominent role during the Battle of Britain and was later used by United States Army Air Forces fighter units in support of the daylight bombing of Germany. Duxford remained an active RAF airfield until 1961. After the Ministry of Defence declared the site surplus to requirements in 1969 the Imperial War Museum received permission to use part of the site for storage. The entirety of the site was transferred to the museum in February 1976.

Excellent family day out. We enjoyed looking at all the aircraft (and there are loads!). The use of different hangers makes it easy to break the day up and there is plenty of outside space for the kids to run around. The interactive displays are excellent and bring to life the exhibits, there is so much to see in a day. Take time to visit the areas that you wouldn't perhaps choose on first sight such as the restoration hangers as they offer a different insight.

Brilliant airplanes, amazing food in both restaurants, the workshop was really affordable and very good quality food, Concorde is a must-see as you can go inside it. Brilliant day out, and neighbouring villages are allowed in free! 10/10! However There is a fair amount of walking needed to see the American planes and war tanks. Also it can get very busy at certain times, so make sure you get there early

Excellent day out with plenty of information on display. Lots to entertain all ages and space to actually make progress around groups who are going slowly. Be warned there is a fair bit of walking but there is a free bus service between the various hangers if you need assistance. The Armoury cafe caters for full lunches or just a coffee and a cake, and not too expensive for an in house cafe. Keep an eye out for the two seater Spitfire doing rides from just outside hanger 1, a nice bonus to the day and wonderful sight and sound.

I came here for a trade show visit FAST and coupled with that we also got access to the museum.with our visit. Fantastic to see the aircraft and the history that comes with it. Fascinating experience. I used to come here with my grandad many years ago when he was alive. And it brought back many happy memories.

Excellent day out with the family, so good to be able to board so many aircraft, exhibits were very good. Will be going back. A pity there isn't an annual membership currently, however I believe there will be one towards the end of the month..
