Hank's Guitar Shop is a delight for any musician! They offer top-quality guitars, and the shop’s aesthetic is fantastic. It’s truly inspiring to browse and explore such an impressive selection. Highly recommend for guitar enthusiasts!
Though the historic shop itself is fantastic, with some great vintage instruments and the junior staff members of the shop are friendly and knowledgeable, the manager of the shop leaves a lot to be desired with his lack of customer service skills. When representing your company you should remain respectful and polite to your customers at all times. The manager is a grey haired man with glasses and Indie styling. I tried out two guitars with a very nice Fender amp and was interrupted several times as I was about to try the guitar I was most interested in. This in itself wasn’t a problem and I was friendly and polite to the other customers, even helping out the teenage customer buying her first guitar, as I am a professional guitarist and have been a tutor for 15 years. The girl had been left to her own devices unable to play anything, so I helped out and showed her how to form a few chords. Her parent/ guardian was thankful for the help and so was the teenage customer, who left with a smile on her face. No sooner had I got to try the guitar I had waited patiently to play, the manager stormed over and rudely proclaimed “you’ve got 20 more seconds to shred and then I’m going to stop you” as if he was a school teacher telling off a young kid. This sort of treatment is highly inappropriate, but I made light of the situation and played a more melodic piece of music. The manager then stormed over to me and turned off the amplifier and said “right the shows over” and then proceeded to go back to the counter and stand there slagging me off to another staff member. Though I hadn’t planned on purchasing the guitar that day I may have given it some thought and returned to the shop or had it posted to my house. I ended up buying a fairly expensive product and was certainly not a “time waster” customer. Because of this experience I certainly won’t be purchasing any instruments from this shop. In response to the below reply you have now fabricated details of what happened. I waited elsewhere in the shop for a long time to allow the busy period to die down and my friend to be available to serve me as I had a specific purchase in mind. The comments you made were not in jest and you were not overly busy in that time. I was not shredding at full volume for 30 minutes and did not play the song Lennie. If you had simply asked me to turn down a bit that would have been perfectly acceptable. I briefly had a go on a the previous person had used and played an excerpt from 2 Led Zeppelin songs then someone tried out Brian May Signature guitar. I was apologetic and moved out of the way as I didn’t want to disrupt other people. No sooner had I sat down to try the Strat I wanted, I was moved off by the girl I mentioned which again is absolutely fine. I waited patiently and even helped her to play a bit as previously stated. The lady she was with suggested she let me go on the amp and I said I wasn’t in a hurry and continued to wait. I played a small part of a piece of music by the artist for the signature guitar and the story continues as I previously stated. I played Little wing by Jimi Hendrix, a slow melodic song and began to play part of another melodic Hendrix song. I was still waiting for my friend to serve me at this point and let me try out some pedals with the strat which is similar to mine. There were other more reasonable ways to act if I inadvertently interrupted you working and standing behind the counter loudly talking about me and making sarcastic comments to the young girl is not the way to do it. I have spent 15 years teaching students sometimes in groups where they are making a racket for ages and yes it can be wearing but how you spoke to me and about me within earshot is not ok. I don’t need my ego massaging and was just playing pieces of music appropriate to the instrument. I would appreciate taking this up with the shop owner not you Shane as your conduct is the problem and I will address the fabricated point you have used to undermine my honest account of how I was treated. I spent £200 in your shop and deserve better.
Nice building and nice to look at the guitars. Was hoping to try a guitar and get some assistance as I am a complete beginner. Walked around the shop this afternoon but could not grab anyone who looked like they worked there. There was a chap upstairs who looked more interested in tuning the guitars and the guys behind the till was more interested in having a conversation with another employee. Not a hello or bye coming into and leaving that shop. Shame such a shop is let down by the lack of customer service skills.Waste of time overall. Would have tried and bought today - will definitely look else where.
Came in to buy the £3000 SG , Never have I been spoken to so rudely by anyone who works in any type of shop before in the manor i was spoken too, so I simply went across the road and and bought a similar guitar from wunjoe’s… I will never come back to this shop again. It is no wonder these shops are closing one by one if the members of staff are so blatantly rude.
Great shop with some lovely vintage amps and amazing selection of fabulous guitars. Your left to try them out and the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and laid back
The shop itself is one of the coolest places I've been to in London. It's set in an old building with fantastic old staircases. It's full of history and character, and, of course, guitars! If you're a musician and want a guitar, this is the place to go. The service, on the other hand, left a bit to be desired. I took my 10-year-old grandson there to help get him inspired to play his guitar. I was hoping someone could have a little chat with him, maybe play a few chords, just so he could see a real-life musician up close and personal I can't exactly take him to any clubs. He doesn't have a lot of confidence and I was hoping this would be one of those life-changing, childhood moments. But when we walked in, the young man behind the till was on the phone. And he stayed on the phone for a long time. He looked at us, but gave no signal that he would be with us asap. I believe he may have been on a business call, but still, we were in-store customers. We wandered around for a bit, waiting for him to get off the phone and hoping to see some other staff. Eventually I saw another man there, but I didn't know whether he was a customer or staff. I asked him if he worked there and could someone help us. We brought my grandson's guitar to be re-strung and tuned. That gentleman did help us, but had no inclination at all to answer questions. He wasn't rude, but he told us that any questions we had, we could get on youtube to find answers. Seriously? So we went back upstairs hoping to have better luck with the man behind the till. I looked at him and smiled, clearly in need of assistance. He just looked at us and then back down at whatever he was doing he was off the phone by now. I suppose a middle-aged woman and a little boy weren't rock-n-roll enough for him to waste his time. What he didn't know is that I had money in my pocket, ready to buy a better guitar. If only he had made any effort to help us, he could have made a sale. So, yes, it's a cool place, but if you want to buy a guitar, you'll probably have to be very assertive to get any assistance.
I always like to visit music/guitar shops when I’m on vacation, you can get a feel for what the locals use/like to play. It’s also fun checking out rare instruments and the different brands. This shop is very interesting, it’s packed wall to wall with instruments, narrow stairways bring you up to more and more of a selection as you climb.
An iconic guitar boutique in an iconic guitar street. At least 3 floors full of string instruments, ranging from vintage to modern guitars and basses.
Great shop with illustrious history, incredible selection of beautiful guitars across a range of prices and highly knowledgeable, friendly guys working there. Also a tasty wallop of some old Beatles b-sides when I entered rather got me in the spirit of things, sadly I didn't have the budget for a Harrison special Grestch Country Gent... Will be back for more than just strings.
I cannot recommend Hank’s enough. You won’t find a more knowledgeable, patient and helpful set of staff than the team there. I would highly recommend them whether you’re just starting out or have been playing guitar for years.
