Grove Ferry Inn

About

More than just a pub. A home. Happy team, muddy pigs, fluffy chickens, great food, mahoosive garden, dogs encouraged. #keepingitlocal #lovelocal

Story

Ah, the countryside. Is there anything better?

Nestling on the bank of the Great Stour River is the Grove Ferry Pub. Here, you can ignore the rest of the world and just relax – whatever the season, there’s so much to explore you’re bound to forget your worries.

Start by saying hi to the house animals; Sam, Bilbo and Pickle the pig or Pedro the golden pheasant – you can even join in on the morning routine of collecting fresh eggs from the ‘chicks’. There’s a HUUUUUUUGE garden where they regularly soak up the sun, we suggest you join in!

Inside is a haven of food and drink; the grub is fresh, locally sourced and delicious – perfected British classics with a quirky twist or two. The Sunday roast is a speciality, so make sure you ring up and book before you pop in or you might miss out! And the drink? Well, how does lavender-infused cocktails (Grove Ferry used to be a lavender farm!), a cask ale room and delicious vino sound?

The pub is the epitome of cosy country style and there’s plenty more: a boathouse (wedding parties, birthdays, anniversaries or just a big ‘ole bash…if these walls could speak!), a terrace overlooking the river, an outside bar, a BnB with six boutique bedrooms upstairs, fireplaces, cosy sofas, lots of dining space and a friendly team. If you’re staying for the weekend, you can also go kayaking, hiking on the Nature Reserve across the road or visit the nearby villages.

Like we said, is there anything better than the countryside? Ssssh, don’t tell the city folk, they’ll all come running (it’s just an hour from King’s Cross!).

Food is described on the menu as if it is a gastro pub in Kent but unfortunately it doesn't meet the same standards. A few items were unavailable possibly due to the hot weather or Bank Holiday. We weren't told this until ordering and even then the alternatives we wanted were also out of stock. The service is slow and almost non existent in the restaurant area. The pineapple juice is extremely sweet. The cod and chips was nice, a bit posher than your normal pub lunch and tasted worth the money. We were surprised to have the burger served in a black bin, not burnt but actual black bread. It was rather off putting. It was described on the menu as a brioche bun but didn't look like one. As we were leaving we saw other people eating burgers in normal buns so they definitely do them. The sausages on the sausage and mash were nice but the whole dish was ruined by the burnt parsnip crisps served on top. They gave the dish an awful overall taste. We wouldn't recommend this pub and won't be returning.

Great location alongside River. Used the 2 course for £16 menu which had enough choice to satisfy us. Meals prepared in a reasonable time and were good quality.

Could be so much better if more staff on for busy bank holiday. Queues for half hour to get a drink. Shame as such a great beauty spot for river trip and walks. Will go again in quieter times. Worth a visit.

Very nice venue and easy to find. Would be lovely in the summer when you could sit outside by the river. The stagg were very friendly and keen to help. The food was excellent quality. However for the price, and it wasn't cheap as pubs go, we all thought portions were small. Definitely needed to have a dessert to fill the hole, which again wasn't cheap. Increase the portion size and you'd have a 5 star pub restaurant.

There were rats, rats as big as alley cats. Not in the stores but as soon as we arrived at this wonderful looking place we were confronted by a pig sty , in the literally sense, in front of the car park. The pig wallowing in the foul smelling mud was not the off putting part but the plague of rats swarming around here. I was planning on taking my aunt out for a nice meal but the expression on her face said what I was thinking. No thank you. Got back in the car and left. I cannot comment on the menu as obviously I never sampled it. I wonder if pork was on the menu? Mayhap a form of Ratatouille. see
