Glentower Lower Observatory

About

Formally known as the Lower Weather Observatory with direct links to Ben Nevis.
Now a Luxury Guest House on the shores of Loch Linnhe Fort William.

Story

Ben Nevis and The Observatory

In the 1890's and early 1900's, pioneering meteorologists raised the funds to built a weather observatory on the summit of Ben Nevis, and also a new home for the Observatory Superintendent. Glentower was where the telegraph signals came in from the summit and were transmitted to Liverpool and other main shipping ports, where warnings for gales were provided for ship owners and skippers.

Today, Glentower is possibly Fort William's most historical link to the past...

Our favorite B&B stay during our highlands trip. Trevor was a lovely host and very friendly. Each room is individually themed and beautifully decorated, ours was spacious and had a nice view of the back garden. Very quiet in the room also. Breakfast was made to order and was brought out fast! Don't skip trying the Scottish Porridge, it was so good and unique. Easy to walk downtown for dinner and great loch views.
Just an all around great place to stay. We liked the big bed and great shower. Thanks so much.Rooms: 5/5
Wonderful historic home close to town, offering easy parking and warm hospitality. Breakfasts are very well performed, rooms are perfectly clean and comfortable. Trevor and Catrina are caring and welcoming hosts. Very, very high marks. Be sure to read about the history of the house, and learn about the name; fascinating history.Rooms: 5/5
We had a nice and large room with seating and kettle. There is no lift and the rooms are only accessible via stairs. For breakfast we could choose from a menu of dishes from cereal with yoghurt to porridge to salmon with egg or full Scottish breakfast, which was also available in a vegetarian version. The rooms are done daily. We had a pleasant stay!
Where to start,B&B looks fantastic, inside looks homely, our room was just as we would wished for. The owners Trevor and Catriona, their staff Rhona and Sandra made our short stay most enjoyable. The room was top notch great view, really comfortable and clean, breakfast if you have the full scottish will set you up for the day. The view you get standing outside the front is one to behold, the loch and the mountains will draw us back for another visit. Once again thank you all and we hope that we to be able to get back soon. Best wishes from Tracey and Carlton
Lovely B&B, great hosts, decent breakfast accommodating everyone's requests. Very handy for Fort William on foot, and the stunning, surrounding area. Our room was very nice, separate single beds for the kids which is always a bonus. 4 piece bathroom very stylish. The friendly hosts were also happy to pass on their knowledge of good places to eat, see the local wildlife and other useful information. I would very happily stay there again. Only slight negative is that it is not perhaps the cheapest.
The question of why it was excellent? The room was spacious, beautiful, super clean, the beds were comfy and the bathroom was Wow! We had a bay window to see the mists sitting on the water while drinking tea. The breakfasts were super tasty and set us up for the day and the takeaway breakfast for our day trip was so very thoughtful. The hosts are extremely friendly and special people and it was our favorite hotel in Scotland on our trip. Feel very blessed to have stayed there.
So comfortable, so stylish, lovey breakfast, great location! We loved our stay here and everything felt luxurious after several days hiking and camping. We were so lucky to find a room there!Rooms: 5/5
Absolutely amazing b&b. We felt most welcome and were very pleased with the room. The bathroom was outstanding. Breakfast was wonderful and plenty and owners and staff made sure we had everything we needed. If we return to Fort William we'll be sure to visit GLO again.
Lovely cosy rooms and in an ideal location- 5 minutes walk away from bars, restaurants and the town. Stunning view right on the loch and Trevor was really lovely and friendly - even dug out a set of scales for us which was probably a request he wasn't expecting! Lovely breakfast and lovely staff. Really enjoyed our stay in Fort William :
