Story

The George and Dragon is an 18th century coaching inn situated in the heart of Cumbria. What makes it so special is that its inspiration, history, passion and produce come from the Lowther Estate, where the owner's family has been producing food for more than 800 years. Our philosophy is sustainability, simplicity and taste. The fresh produce is used in a thoughtful and honest style by head chef Ian Jackson

Restaurant only. Lovely atmosphere. Rural, rustic. Expensive food (charges for 2 pieces of bread!) but locally sourced fayre and flavoursome dishes across our party of four. I had fantastic beef dish. Only criticism is too much salt in cooking... Let the diner add to their taste please.

If you want great food made from locally sourced outlets then here's the place for you. Recommend anything with beef in it. The Sunday roast was fantastic and they ask how you like you near done x Booking recommended especially at a weekend.

Using produce sourced from local suppliers and farms, the George and Dragon in Clifton is reliably good offering a wide range of fresh dishes to suit most tastes. The environs are rustic and cosy. But, as the pub is within easy reach of the A66, M6 and A6, booking is a good idea as it is often busy. A good selection of local beers are also on offer and the staff are always welcoming.
