A huge disappointment to anyone such as myself who enjoys art and and has loved visiting public art galleries since I was a teenager. But then what kind of Labor council, (OMBC,) closes the LINK center purpose built for the use of it's disabled residents and then turns it over to commercial use; whilst funding an art gallery, (run as little more than a cheap crèche for it's management, staff and their mates, children; few of whom even live in Oldham ) that no one else ever seems to want to visit ? It's management are snotty, rude, arrogant and utterly uninterested in pursuing any kind of engagement or dialogue with the townspeople of Oldham and seem hell bent on pursuing their own agenda completely regardless of the views, tastes and interests of people who are actually supposed to be paying for it. However fortunately there are already 2 other excellent and inspiring public art galleries , (with in a relatively short tram ride of Oldham,) being runwith flare, talent and imagination in the Greater Manchester Area. Manchester Art Gallery with some of the very best Victorian painting on public display anywhere in the UK; all the pre-Raphaelites Turner, Stubbs etc and the Whitworth Art Gallery with more contemporary and frankly sometimes brilliant collection; and always interesting temporary exhibitions and it's extensive collection of fabrics and commercial designs, and always Alice Kettle's huge masterpiece 3 Caryatids, both are worth visiting. I just wish I could say the same about the Oldham Gallery.
