Situated within the Georgian Quarter of Beverley, in North Bar Within we looked forward to visiting Fleur de Lis. Parking is rarely easy and certainly not on a Saturday lunchtime, so my wife and I took a taxi which dropped us outside. Allow yourself plenty of time for parking if travelling by car. It can be a problem at times. Do watch the cobbles and paving stone if, like my wife, you are unsteady on your feet. The exterior of the restaurant is attractive and certainly has kerb appeal. Entering the restaurant was no problem at all. There were four steps to negotiate but a firm banister to grab hold of too. The seating is very comfortable and roomy. The ambience and décor are welcoming, fresh and relaxing. Modern certainly but with a gentle pandering to typical French late 18th century chic: mirrors, heavy wallpapers, chandeliers, paintings and candle-light too. Please review the photographs to see what I mean. All rather pleasant and well done. All very welcoming. The toilet facilities are naturally very modern, scrupulously clean and suitable for all, including the disable. Excellent taps! The waiter was charming, considerate and very helpful. The service however was problematic. I am happy to wait for my meal and, in most French restaurants, this is quite the norm. However, we were in the restaurant for well over three hours. My daughter had to quickly leave because her parking had run out. It really did take too long for the food to arrive. My grandson’s frites had been forgotten, had to be quickly cooked, arrived late therefore and were then a tad underdone. I felt rather sorry for the waiter who seemed to be left just hanging around. The cooking and service therefore really do need to be speeded up. There seemed to be only one person in the kitchen. If so, it was not enough. The menus are quite comprehensive with all the traditional French dishes on offer but the set lunch menu was disappointing and limited in scope, so we gave it a miss. The meal itself was quite expensive. The meal was fine but not as good quality-wise, nor in terms of value compared with elsewhere. Interestingly and rather surprisingly, we all thought there was a distinct lack of garlic in many of the dishes! The fish soup was tasty but not as good as the one served in a restaurant not too far away. I had the same impression regarding the duck and the rather bland fish cakes, my daughter felt the same about the onion soup. We had tasted better elsewhere. The run baba was dry with no trace of rum whatsoever. My wife, an ex-home economics teacher was very disappointed and frankly believes someone had simply forgotten to add the rum. I tried it and agree. No evidence of rum. Some of the dishes however were lovely. We enjoyed the crème brulee for instance. The scallops went down very well with my wife but would there be sufficient for a young adult? My wife also recommended the delicious chicken tarragon. The frogs’ legs, the mussels, the cheese board and the steak all got the thumbs up too but why wasn’t mustard readily available for the steak? It seemed to take quite a while to find some. So, in terms of taste, a mixed bag really and disappointing considering the prices charged. The presentation of the dishes was always excellent but the amount of food provided would have been inadequate for many young men and women. Potentially, this restaurant has much to offer but in practice it sometimes falls short. It’s early days yet and there is time to improve but the issues noted above need to be addressed if the Fleur de Lis is to be successful. We sincerely hope that it can be.
