Fletcher Moss Park

Story

Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden is situated in Didsbury, Manchester, England, between the River Mersey and Stenner Woods. The park is named after local Alderman Fletcher Moss, who donated the park to the city of Manchester in 1915. It is part botanical garden and part wildlife habitat, but also offered recreational facilities such as recently refurbished tennis courts, rugby and football pitches, and a family-run café.HistoryThe main part of the gardens is a walled rock garden that was laid out by the botanist Robert Wood Williamson on a south-facing slope. Williamson sold the gardens and rockery along with his house, called The Croft, to Alderman Fletcher Moss, in 1912.Fletcher Moss, born in July 1843, was a philanthropist who led many public works in Manchester; in 1915 he persuaded the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to fund the construction of a public library in Didsbury. He lived in the Old Parsonage by St James's Church, Stenner Lane, having taken over residence from the vicar, a Rev. W. J. Kidd, who left the property complaining it was haunted. In 1919 he gave the gardens to the people of Manchester, declaring he had "determined to offer all that part of my property extending from the Fletcher Moss Playing Fields to Stenner Lane, to the corporation if I could retain the use of it for my life".Robert Williamson's old house, the Croft, was the location of the first meeting of the organisation later to become known as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). In 1889, Emily Williamson née Bateson (Robert’s wife) formed a group called the "Plumage League" to protest against the breeding of birds for plumage to be used in women's hats, a highly fashionable practice at the time. The group gained popularity and eventually amalgamated with the "Fur and Feather League" in Croydon, and formed the RSPB.

A wonderful park for a refreshing walk and a breath of fresh air. The grounds were slightly damp due to recent rain, but it didn’t detract from the experience. The park is expansive, so be mindful of directions—getting a bit lost added to the adventure! Overall, an enjoyable experience.
Beautiful! Went to the parkrun here and then went to the van for a vegan sausage barm, very nice, £4.50. Free toilets and not bad for a park either!Wandered through the garden afterwards.
To find such a green place in manchester is just refreshing .. I went for a walk there thinking it's a small park .. but it was really big .. it's full of nature and colours .. and it's autumn so you can see different colours of the trees .. and you can walk along the river and breath some fresh air with a cup of coffee !! Highly recommend it for nature lovers !
Great place for a walk, a family picnic or a place to relax with a book. Lots of plants, flowers, trees. There are toilets, a place where you can sit to order ice cream, coffee, 2 restaurants next to the park. At the entrance to the park a little hard with a car park but you can leave the car in the street next to the park for free. Dog-friendliness: In the restaurant there is even water in a beautiful barrel space for dogs
Seeing how beautiful the collection at this botanical garden is brought a tear to my eye. The plants at The Rockery are some of the best, and it's beautifully maintained thanks to the volunteers. There's a food truck nearby with good drinks, food and ice cream. Loads of benches all around The Rockery, I sat on one high up and listened to some music. I think life peaked there metaphorically and physically.
Lovely gardens to escape to. Lots of paths that criss cross each other. Makes the park seem bigger than it is. Lots of benches and picnic tables. Squirrels, birds, lots of varied plants and trees. There is a cafe but I haven't tried the food. Seems popular though. If you want to clear your head and de stress.... This is the place.
Beautiful place to come for a walk and sit in the sun. I had an aimless wander and ended up by the river which was beautiful. I think I ended up walking out of the park into another park, it's bigger than you think! I loved getting lost here. Lots of paths to wander down. The rockery is a beautiful place to explore. Don't forget the parsonage gardens too, just opposite. It was a gorgeous sunny day and I spent a good few hours walking through the park and soaking up the sun. Finished with a drink at The Didsbury. Highly recommend
Great place for walk. Lush green as far as your eyes can see. Dog friendly as well. Playground: There is a playground inside. Restrooms: There is a cafe next to the garden. Dog-friendliness: The park is dog friendly. Picnic area: You can get packed food I guess. But no bbq.
Nice place for a walk by yourself, with friends or with dogs: Good coffee and brunch places nearby as well. There’s a bit of the garden where the dogs can’t go though, but plenty of walks around to go.
Beautiful place to walk around, carry on walking through for a walk along the river. The trees and plants really do create a lovely oasis. The food truck.. a bit meh
