F. Cooke

Story

Fred Cooke opened his first pie & eel shop in Clerkenwell in 1862, and before long ran a popular chain with branches across East London. In 1900, Fred opened this shop in Broadway Market, and his grandson Bob, the guv’nor, was born upstairs. Pies, eels served throughout the week from 9-5pm.

On Thu-Sat evenings from 7pm-late, we become ‘F. Cooke’s Cocktail Club’.

Come and enjoy a fancy mixed drink, or our local craft beers, English wines and homemade shrubs, bitters and tinctures. Our cocktail menu is inspired by our East End heritage and Mrs Cooke’s tropical holidays. If you love pina colada’s..

You may enter feeling optimistic and possibly leave ruined.

Hands down my absolute favorite spot to eat during my entire trip to London. Like many people, I learned of F Cooke from videos online years ago and had it marked down as a must-visit for whenever I made it to London and it was everything I could have asked for and more. Came in for lunch on a weekday, shop was nice and quiet with only a few people enjoying their lunch. The gal behind the counter was super friendly and had me feeling like I was being served in my own kitchen. Joe, the owner, whom I had seen in countless videos, was enjoying a cup of tea at a table and noticed my non-English accent. He sparked up a conversation and it made my trip. He was so welcoming. My quest was to have a pie everyday while in London - from the classic spots to the high end fancy places and this one beat them all. It was just perfect. Everything a pie, mash, and liquor needed to be. Simple and made so well. I just can't say enough about how much I enjoyed being in this shop. Thank you Joe & Team!
A time capsule of work-class London. No fancy decorations, just proud family memories. Calm and friendly service. We came here to try the historic jellied eel. It’s actually nice, better than the appearance. Not fishy at all. Just natural flavor. I actually like the texture lol, especially as someone who loves fish skin. I can actually imagine it in a Michelin star restaurant with British history theme— transparent jelly, floating piece of eel, flowers, drop of liquor sauce lol. The pie is also unique. Not the more common pub versions. Looks and tastes like minced beef dumpling soaked in parsley soup. Mash is nice, solid potato and not too oily with extra cream or butter. Chili vinegar is tasty. The pie can be slightly warmer though.
This fourth generation Pie & Mash shop is one of the originals, and the brand name dates back as far as 1841. The Hoxton branch is located approximately 15 mins walk from Old Street Station, and its traditional green frontal is not hard to miss. Upon arrival, there was no queue to enter. Service was quick and friendly with the usual can drinks on offer. I went for the standard Double-Double, which came to £13.50 with a drink. There was a portion of liquor under both pies, but i feel a little more could have been provided. Pies were pipping hot, but I felt the meat was over seasoned and more salty than usual. As soon as you enter you enter a mobile black spot, but maybe that's a good thing to encourage good old-fashioned conversation. Plenty of locals about and always a friendly face behind the counter. It won't be long before I return
An absolutely delightful time dining at one of London’s oldest and traditional establishments. The pie, mash and parsley liquor with a side of jellied eel is an experience!Food: 5/5
This is a must see experience whether you are local or a tourist. This place should be included in a list of Unesco Heritage sites. Sawdust on the floor because people use to spit eel bones on the floor? Come on, this is too too real. I can’t ask for more. 10/10
Came here because of the YouTube videos and it did not dissapoint. Had the vegan pie & mash with parsley sauce which was delicious, ended up chatting to Joe for a while too, incredibly friendly and lovely bloke. Ideal east end experience, lovely place to goFood: 5/5
Without doubt one of the best Pie and Mash in London. Pies are crammed full of fresh meat and liquor is top notch. Always served with a smile. Love it here.Food: 5/5
Went in mid afternoon to miss the crowds. First time. Asked Amy a thousand questions and she even got me to try the eel. Everything was absolutely first rate. Even bought the chilli and regular vinegars to take home they were that amazing. Amy is the best! bar none!Food: 5/5
Had a great experience here, with Charlotte being an amazing host. As it was my first time to London, I wanted to visit F Cooke after seeing it on YouTube. The store was quiet as I came in right after it opened, so Charlotte sat down with me while I ate and shared the history of the restaurant and the area. It was a great conversation The food was simple and very tasty. I got a pie and mash & jellied eels and finished it all along with a coffee. What a great experience! I’ll be back someday!
Went today 18/7/24 and was really looking forward to it. Considering Pie and Mash establishments are dying in the East End you'd think more care would be taken with this Hoxton branch but it appears not. I can't think why it has so many rave reviews. Dirty, dirty, dirty. I had to clean food stains off out table, at this point I would of left but didn't want to create a fuss for those I was with. Table next to us waitress clears plates but leaves loads of food spillage on the table. Not good. A senior man at one table rolling up meat with his bare hand to make what looked like burgers. Have these people not heard of catering gloves? The food was nice despite all this, and plenty of people there but it just felt mucky and unclean. No wonder Pie and Mash shops are dying because this was a disgrace. I won't be back.
