About

As we specialise in Lewis Carroll, a comprehensive selection of illustrated editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is always available, together with rare Alice ephemera and some of Carroll's more obscure works.

Story

Located in the centre of Cecil Court, the quiet pedestrian lane lined with antiquarian bookshops, tucked away in London's bustling West End, Marchpane opened in August 1989.

During the last two decades Marchpane has become well known as a specialist in children's and illustrated books from the eighteenth century up to the present day. On our shelves you can find early publications from Newbery's moral tales to signed first editions of Harry Potter.

As we specialise in Lewis Carroll, a comprehensive selection of illustrated editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is always available, together with rare Alice ephemera and some of Carroll's more obscure works.

We stock all the best British collectable children’s books, we nearly always have copies of great classics such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, Nursery Rhymes as well as editions of Andersen, Grimm and Perrault etc.

We also stock some of the rarest Home Front and Political children’s books of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Sorry, but we do not offer valuations. Please do not ask, as a refusal often offends.

On our London weekend trip, visiting Marchpane was easily one of our favorite memories. The owner is super kind and really took his time to make us feel right at home in the city. We shared a great talk about Dick Bruna and all other kinds of fascinating subjects. He has a lot of knowledge and a beautiful collection. Definitely a must! And to make it even better, the entirety of Cecil Court is a dream for any booklover!
Incredible bookstore full of my childhood. Picked up a couple of Enid blyton stories for my kid and also this hilarious picture in tht Alice in wonderland section. Can't wait to be back.
A wonderful place if you look for any old books. We had a lovely chat with Mathew, almost made him be late for a dinnerparty. You could feel that he has a genuine passion for the things he sells, as they all seemd to be things he collected to share his passion Thank you for the Enid Blyton books Greetings from Switzerland
This is our absolute favorite bookshop in London! The owner Matthew is so friendly and helpful. We really appreciated his expertise and willingness to explain so much to us about first editions, obscure and beautiful prints, and collecting books. The shop has a very large collection, not only of children's books, but a lot from the world of literature classics, including many special illustrated editions. His knowledge is only matched by his kindness and great sense of humor. We will visit his shop every time we come to London. Thanks again!
The best rare book store I have ever visited. Matthew is extremely knowledgeable and had some delightful stories to tell.
Lovely little store, perfect for those looking for beautiful antique books and postcards, and a way to escape the bustle of London. The clerk was super kind and welcoming. All around enjoyable experience!
Cute little shop tucked away in an alley. Had some lovely finds in there. My wife found a beautiful copy of Paddington in amazing condition which was the same as her mum had when she was a child. Birthday present sorted!
I read somewhere that this bookstore was the place to go for Carroll's Alice in Wonderland fans. And it definitely is! In no other place have I seen so many different editions of Alice and in so many different languages. The bookstore, which specializes in children's books, is small but what it lacks in size it makes up for in content. This place is a collector's paradise and Alice's fans should look no further.
I discovered this bookstore by accident, as my grandparents had taken the family to another store nearby. My mother stepped out to browse around before finding Marchpane and promptly dragged me in. Now, I hope you all are in for a long review because oh, boy... I've always felt alone in this world, desperately fighting to survive in a place where logic and a hard shell were your greatest weapons - neither of which I possess. I find children's media, art, and stories a solace - my own childhood far too brief for my taste. Growing up I had inevitably come to the bitter conclusion that somewhere gentle, soft, and fantastical only existed in the books I read - thankfully I was proven wrong. The shop is small and chock-full with beautiful books, practically all as whimsical as the shop itself, and there is a sense of peace that settles over the shop - an tingling aura that makes you feel as though you're safe and that it's okay to let go of the cynicism that digs into your skin with a vice-like grip - the shop equivalent of Aunt Beast from A Wrinkle in Time. On my second trip to Europe - this time with my school - the one thing I was looking forward to was entering this bookstore a second time and getting a companion to the books I had gotten a year prior. However, I was met with disappointment - the store was not open during the little free time I would have gotten. Two days of no sleep to adjust to the time change, three flights one overseas, a five hour delay, another two hour delay, the overwhelming sights and sounds of London - a stark contrast to the familiar prairies, and having no alone time did not upset me nearly as much as the realization that I would not be able to see the bookstore again it was really the only reason I had brought pounds on the trip after all. I hope to return one day - likely as an adult who, faced with the mortgages and taxes, will have to live a life believing magic isn't real. But there is a small comfort in that, though magic may not be real, this bookstore will be... And honestly, I think that's the next best thing.
Attracted first by the Alice adventure in wonderland collection and then surprised by the Dr. Who collection… This combination among others makes the shop and the owner so so so cute…
