Derwent Pencil Museum

Story

The Derwent Pencil Museum is in Keswick, Cumbria, in the north-west of England. The museum is home to the biggest colouring pencil in the world, the idea of technical manager Barbara Murray. The yellow pencil was completed on 28 May 2001, is 7.91m long, and weighs 446.36kg.The first pencil factory in Keswick opened in 1832. The second and current factory was started in the 1920s and completed in 1950 (it closed in 2007 when the owners moved production to Workington). The museum opened in 1981, and now receives over 80,000 visitors a year from all around the world. It is particularly popular with visitors from the county of Yorkshire, due to the importance of pencil production for the local economy during the 1930s. The museum features as one of the locations in the 2012 film Sightseers.

I didn't have much expectations before I went here, but was unexpectedly surprised. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Adding the quiz really adds to the experience and gets you to interact more. Would recommend for others, probably centred more towards adults than kids though

Interesting place! Did you know that graphite was mire valuable than gold in 1650? Neither did I! Lots of other interesting facts regarding the mining of graphite and the production of pencils reside in this museum. Including one of WWlls secret weapons. Worth a visit. Very friendly staff and a great cafe.

Good value at £5. Interesting history to read and videos to watch. A quiz with 20 questions helped focus our minds while going round and earned us 4 pencils and a pack of erasers and a pack of pencil grips. Friendly staff too.

Avoid telling people that you have been. Got ribbing from friends that I was obsessed with stationery (true) or cruelly imposing boring museum visits on my kids (true but not in this case). A fascinating place... don't allocate a day to your visit but good nonetheless and you get a free pencil with your fee. Understand why they keep this in Keswick, but really should be next to the new factory, so they can give you a view of the manufacturing process like the Cadbury place in Birmingham.
