Story

Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby.
We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire.

This is my local museum and I've been visiting for years! It's free entry so I visit often, they have lots of exhibitions and even have new ones every other month. The staff are so friendly and very helpful. There is also a gift shop and a cafe - since entry is free, you have pennies for a cuppa or maybe a little present. If you love art then they have a wonderful gallery. If you love animals, then they have a brilliant display of taxidermy - there's even a taxidermy fox on display that you can pat! There's a massive exhibition about war - with uniforms to try on and other interactive items, also lots of weapons to admire (my boyfriends favourite part of the museum) and loads more! This museum is definitely worth the visit!

Nice museum where you can learn about Derby and it's history, some local artists work and much much more. Small shop on entering with friendly staff and then free entry to the museum. Small cafe with good food at reasonable prices. Throughout the year they have theme events, we attended when there was a showing of television childrens programs, which was brilliant. Give yourself at least two hours to look round

A great morning or afternoon out! Lots for all ages, very family-friendly. The Joseph Wright gallery is superb, with a good explanation of each painting so that you understand the significance of what you are seeing. The paintings are carefully chosen and many have connections to prominent Derbyshire people from Wright's time. I felt I really understood what Wright was all about. In other galleries, there's an excellent display of Roman finds, and a 3500 year old longboat which was an unintended highlight of my visit - it's quite awesome! The staff are very friendly and helpful, taking obvious pride in the museum and gallery, and the food in the coffee shop is good. Quality items (hardly any "tat"!) are on sale in the gift shop - delighted to see pottery on sale from Parkwood Pottery, thank you for promoting this community enterprise!

This is a great local museum with some interesting and well displayed sections. We had come to see the Bonnie Prince Charlie room and this is an atmospheric space that gets across Charles' frustration at having to retreat from Derby. There are enthusiastic and knowledgeable members of staff around the museum to assist.
