Dean Heritage Centre

About

Explore, Experience and Enjoy the Heart of the Forest of Dean at the Dean Heritage Centre.

Story

Set across a five acre site, the Dean Heritage Centre protects, preserves and promotes the unique history and heritage of the beautiful Forest of Dean.

With a wide range of things to see and do, including five onsite galleries exploring the history of the Forest from the Ice Age to the present day; a reconstructed Victorian cottage; a charcoal burner’s camp; a woodland playground; a chainsaw carving demonstration pitch; a variety of animals and an onsite gift shop; there’s always something new and exciting to interest, inspire or surprise you.

With a great programme of special events, exhibitions, art shows and educational workshops throughout the year, it’s a great day out for all the family.

Plus, if that’s not enough, then you can also sample delicious homemade snacks and cakes served in our heritage café overlooking the millpond.

I had a really amazing time again when I spent 2 days joining in the activities. I did archery fire lighting with a steel and flint, woodland walk. Ferret walking and charcoal sculpture. We bought 3 bags of charcoal which is make there. It is very good and doesn't smell nasty, you should try it. Hope you go and enjoy yourself explore everything. I can't wait until my next school holidays. Finley age 8

A little overpriced but can use Tesco vouchers. Otherwise has a lot in a small area which is great if your party can't walk far. A pleasant visit.

If you are interested in Forest history and the culture and the environment, this is the place to tour in a beautiful setting especially the woodlands walks there. If you are after a plastic, cheap experience don't spoil it. Parking free if you go in and still cheaper than the FC Beechenhurst car park. Due for an upgrade with a large grant, because the Centre is totally self-supporting since the FODCouncil withdrew funding. Finally, beware troll reviews.

£22 for a family of three with a four year old for less than 3 hours 'entertainment' - really?!!! Exhibits very tired looking. I'm not a historian, but not convinced all the information was accurate either. Gruffalo trail very disappointing - some of it was closed and we weren't told this when we arrived.. If you want to do the Gruffalo trail, avoid this place, but go to Beechenhurst where it is free (although you pay to park).
