A very surreal experience finding this place, it really is out of the way a bit. You have to go into an underground station, but not all the way. There were people sleeping there, I have no problem with that but it was unexpected. The man in the shop was really good with my kids, the shop was well stocked and I can't complain about it at all.
Very nice guys! Was served by Mr. Young who showed me his version of Oil and water which i bought as i am happy to support magicians. The place is small but has a room at the back where you can take magic classes. Its great to see people cultivate the magic community. They dont have much of a card selection but have a lot of DVDs and gimmicks.
Having read the other reviews I thought I'd leave my own, firstly, it's correct that the shop is difficult to find BUT that gave it that "does anyone else even know about this treasure I've found" feel! The shop assistant was busy doing tricks etc. with another member of staff, which I didn't feel was rude, I preferred that to being pounced on like in regular shops. When we did speak up with a query I took my children along, they're the magicians, not me the guy was only too pleased to help, he showed them countless tricks that they enquired after. Even when I was getting quite bored of their questions, he remained cheery, at the end of a 20-30 minute chat we only purchased a few tricks and he was still pleasant, no hard sell, and was honest with them regarding what he thought would be good purchases for them and what may be a waste of money for their needs
Firstly, this store is so hard to find, even with Google Maps in your hands. It's well hidden below the Charing Cross Underground station. They do not stock a lot of items either, so make sure to phone them in advance if you're coming for a particular product. The staffs, however, are pretty young and friendly magicians. They are willing to demonstrate the magics to you, as well as recommending the appropriate products which suit your needs. All items have clear price tags on them, but again, you could strike a better deal online.
I went here to buy some new decks and magic tricks on my most recent trip to London. It was my first time at Davenports Magic Shop and I really enjoyed it. I liked the presentation of products to get a direct feeling of the magic you're going to buy. Can't wait to come back! Totally recommend this shop for every magician, no matter if beginner or intermediate :
My friend and I were looking for a magic shop to buy things from. We tried a few bigger stores like Hamleys but found they were really targeted at a very young audience, or tourists. After a bit of searching we found Davenports Magic Shop near Charing Cross. There was a trail of butterflies on the floor leading to the shop, so you know it's authentic. ; The staff were helpful and knew their trade well. There was good variety in the supplies available, and also a good selection of books. Next time I'm going to buy anything to do with magic I will go directly here.
Family business. Knowledgeable people happy to talk and show magic. The previous location opposite the British Museum was much more magical but the current place is easy to access by Tube or bus.
Hidden within a pretty ugly underground shopping centre is the world's oldest family-run magic shop. Established in 1898 they cater for every type of magician from amateurs to Vegas pros. If you are lucky you might meet Betty Davenport, the grand-daughter of the founder, who still works in the shop part-time. Davenport's also offer magic classes for adults and children and they regularly hold magic shows in their tiny theatre, surely the smallest one in London? Nearly every time I have visited the staff have been demonstrating tricks to customers, providing a fantastic free show to anyone who happens to be in the shop. Don't be put off by the grotty surroundings, explore and enjoy!
As someone who just got into magic and needed a bit of help and advice where to start I can't recommend this shop enough. Staff were extremely helpful once I brought some tricks they showed me how to do it
Convenient location that's easy to get to, base for a very welcoming magic club and excellent staff in the form of Dan and Dan who've always delivered great service, mentoring and honesty to me. Absolutely superb! =
