Cultra Inn

Story

Cultra railway station is a railway station in the townland of Ballycultra in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. It serves the Cultra residential area and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.ServiceMondays to Saturdays there is a half-hourly service westbound to, Belfast Great Victoria Street, or in one direction, and eastbound to Bangor in the other. More frequent trains run at peak times, and the service reduces to hourly in the evenings. Some peak-hour trains pass through Cultra station without stopping. On Sundays there is an hourly service in each direction.HistoryThe Belfast, Holywood and Bangor Railway was authorised by Act of Parliament on 12 June 1861 and opened in May 1865. The BH&BR crossed the land of some wealthy landowners, whose terms included that Cultra station must be "of an ornamental character" and that "at least One Half of the Trains" must call there, or else the company would be penalised £10 per day.The BH&BR was originally single track and the only passing loop was at, so Cultra station would have had only one platform. However, the Belfast and County Down Railway took over the BH&BR in 1884 and doubled the track between 1897 and 1902, from which time Cultra has had two platforms. In deference to Cultra's wealthy residents the footbridge between the platforms had a roof — the only bridge so equipped on the B&CDR network.

Nice setting with decent food served by friendly staff. Only slight disappointment was the burger with the patty a little bit overcooked. Fish and chips, chicken wings and seafood chowder were top notch. Booking is a must. Great place to have a relaxing lunch with your family.
My future in laws brought my Fiancé and I here to have a look around as a potential wedding venue because they got married here many many years ago. We purchased a bottle of Champagne and the server was about to give us wine glasses to drink them from. When questioned, he said they didn’t have any flutes. No offer to go get them or to be seated while some were picked up from the restaurant. So we had to carry the bottle and ice bucket ourselves to the table and then go find some flutes ourselves from the restaurant. I would understand if he couldn’t leave his station but we watched him leave the hut himself three times during our stay. Vastly disappointed at this level of service from a five star establishment. Only three or four tables were occupied during this time so it wasn’t because it was busy. Nice touch having herbs on the tables except they were all dead. We won’t be coming back.
I had dinner here with my daughter, we both had the soup of the day to start with, it was tomato and red pepper and was quite spicy, which we hadn't expected. The main courses were very good, I had the Chicken Supreme and my daughter had the burger. I was able to get gluten free bread both with the soup and with the cheese board which I had to finish while my daughter had the cheesecake. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived but got busier later. Overall, a very good meal in pleasant surroundings.
Went for a late lunch / early dinner after visiting the Transport Museum. Had booked but took a few minutes for anyone to appear and seat us. There didn't appear to be many staff and they were all busy. Had the Soup of the Day which was Potato and Leek. Warming and peppery and came with a delicious little Wheaten bread scone. I ordered fish and chips for main. It was ok. Nicely presented but the tartare sauce was extremely bland and lacking that vinegrey bite. The pints of beer were around six pounds each and a tea at four pounds which is very overpriced. It was just OK all in all.
Waiting staff were very pleasant which has raised my rating to 2 stars but unfortunately the food just took way too long to come. Then half our table had their food and the other half didn’t- so half the party were finished their meal when some people were just getting their food. The food was tasty but unfortunately the delay in food with hungry children has reduced my rating. I’m unlikely to come back.
We recently took some French friends to the Cultra Inn for lunch and were very impressed at how we were treated by the staff. They were very welcoming and attentive - could not do enough for our friends. The food was very good and, despite them not having any scampi, we all cleared our plates!
This is the second time that i have taken my wife to this place and i have to say the first time was a disaster. This second time was sublime. If you're staying at the Culloden make sure to stop off here for a change of scenery. The food is great and the atmosphere is very relaxing. I have gone back since to this place with my newborn son and have to say the menu is great with loads to choose from even for vegans. There is even plenty of space to push a pram about and even rock if needed. My family enjoyed it soo much that we will be back for my birthday for lunch next week. Enjoy people.
We were at the cultra inn on boxing day with family. Such a lovely afternoon, we eat here every boxing day. The food was really good and the staff attentive as always. Best Christmas pudding I have ever had, would have loved to have had the Christmas menu, this year it was just off the regular menu but it was still lovely
Delicious warm Guinness wheaten-bread scones, as usual. Tasty tomato & red pepper soup. Nice seafood chowder, but not enough sauce, so the bottom half of the bowl was really fish stew. Friendly attentive staff.Recommended dishesSoup of the Day, Wheaten BreadParking spacePlenty of parkingParking optionsFree parking lot
We were a party of 10 out for lunch and we had a great experience. Staff very attentive and all meals were of a high standard. Would recommend this place for good food and pleasant surroundings. Parking: Good room for plenty of cars and not too far to walk.
