The owners requested written detail of one of our credit cards, so that they could bill us what we owed at the end of the holiday I sent them an e-mail with the following: ------------------------------------------ I have always paid my way, and I am happy to provide you with "a £50 refundable deposit (in case of breakages/damage/extra cleaning etc)" and "for the electricity payment too"; although, I would expect to see an itemised bill showing the exact electricity meter details, for this cottage and this cottage only, before and after my stay; however, when your e-mail stated "we just take your card details for our secure online payment system" I did not realise that you actually wanted me to provide you with written details of one of my credit cards; I can assure you that this is just not going to happen, I never provide my credit card details to anyone because it is just not recommended. You are classed as a UK business, due to renting out your properties, and if you are requesting written details of your customer's credit cards as you have of me, then you are taking inadequate steps to safeguard your customers’ credit and debit card details, due to storing them in unencrypted files where they are at risk of being stolen. I teach Professional Ethics at University, and an understanding of the Data Protection Act is covered, and one of the things that I stipulate is that nobody should provide any other person with their credit card details; I have to wonder if you have registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office as a ‘Data Controller’? If you have then why are you asking me for written details of one of my credit cards? I am sure that this is just a misunderstanding, and that I can pay you for my electricity useage in a more secure way that complies with the Data Protection Act. NB. I have sent this e-mail to ensure that we both have a record of the fact that in no way am I refusing to pay a deposit or pay for my electricity useage; however, I do refuse to provide you with written details of one of my credit cards. ------------------------------------------ The did provide me with a suitable way to pay my deposit, which I was happy with; but they should never have requested my credit card details. Other problems: The heating controls were locked, so that it was not possible for us to control the heating, and several of the lights did not work due to bulbs either being burnt out or missing, which meant that we had no real control of the amount of electricity that we using apart from turning lights on, having showers and using the cooker; even so, we still got billed £23.20 for 4 days, even though we were out early, and back late, each day; this would create an average of £174 per month on a 30 day month. This is despite the fact that we were told that "electricity costs are not included in the rental (this is charged at 25p per kwh - this is a non-profit rate to cover the bill)" The settee was too low down for my partner to use; she had to struggle with my help to get out of it. The chairs, near the only table, were too high up and uncomfortable to use. The extra chair, that was provided on the first day due to a request for a better chair, had no arm rests and was uncomfortable to sit in. When laying near the side of the bed, we felt like we would end up falling out of the bed. Overall, our stay at this cottage was decidedly disappointing; however, the area is beautiful.

Really cozy place to stay in a very quiet part of the world. The owners live next door and were really friendly and helpfull. Would love to stay there again.
