The area is very flat and there are many country lanes to explore. Pilling village has a local shop including post office, pub and a pottery with a tearoom. Less than half a mile away is Springfield House Restaurant and Hotel, the perfect place for any celebration. Lane Ends Amenity Area overlooks Morecambe Bay and is used regularly to ‘twitch’ for the many sea birds feeding on the tides in the estuary. The site is protected as part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The area is rich in wildlife, especially birds. Just before dawn the resident Tawny Owls and the Barn Owls are frequently seen flying past the lodge and down the open fields and after dark the bats come out to play.
Pilling sands (a twenty minute walk), are a bird watchers paradise. In winter there are thousands of Pink Foot Geese and many Hooper Swans coming in to feed. They even land in their fields and feed alongside the other birds.
