Really loved my visit here. Wonderful to see so many authentic personal items gathered in one place and not replicas, which is quite common to see in similar museums. Guides were knowledgeable and welcoming and the tea room was a pleasant oasis in the city.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
This Museum holds the world's most important Dickens collection with lots of items including manuscripts, personal items, paintings and other visual sources. The author’s only surviving London house, it’s a chance to experience what Dickens’s home would have been like and learn more about the great novelist. Lovely small museum with gift shop and beautiful garden with café. I really enjoyed wandering round the house
Entry was £12 and it is a fair price for entry to this old terraced house. You can use a QR code in the museum to get an audio guide on your phone but like many I chose not to. It’s a bit of an awkward way to provide audio guides. Im sure it’s a cheaper method but it could be done better. A very good little museum, particularly if you are a fan of the great author’s work. I say that as someone who hasn’t read his books but have seen a few spin off films and brought up in a country where you become accustomed to regular reference to the characters he created. I learned a lot more about the man, his life and his work. The displays and the narratives are well laid out and informative. The staff dotted around the house are fantastic, very friendly and have great knowledge. There’s a shop where you buy tickets and you return to at the end of the trip. There are also toilets at the museum. I spent about 90 minutes looking around and would recommend to others. It left me really eager to read some of his books as he’s probably the second most important and consequential writer in Britain’s storied, literary history. Understanding more about his background helps bring to life the ideas and inspirations for his characters.
Great little museum with friendly staff. The decor looks original and the signage is informative and clear. My only gripe is if there is a group being toured, there isn't room to read the signs.
A lovely little museum with amazing and lovely staff with lots of knowledge! I learnt a lot more about Charles Dickens and it was really cool seeing what his house was like and the furniture he used. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area. The gift shop is lovely as well and they have lots of his books of course!Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I did my french dissertation on Charles Dickens and his life. His fight for children’s rights is masterful and unique for his time. I had a lot of emotions as I walked through these places filled with Dickens' soul. Like a friend's house. Thanks Mr Dickens
A great little museum and ideal for any Charles Dickens fan! Dickens lived here for 3 years, during which time he wrote both Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. The garden cafe was such a lovely retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you'd like to see it in more detail, I've included it in my Youtube video which you can find on my channel 'The Wanderlust Way'
This house is exceptional if you are looking to see and experience some of London’s Victorian history. The basement level was really interesting and with some rather unexpected hedgehog facts I won’t ruin it. A fantastic visit much enjoyed by everyone. Oh, and the gift shop is rather fab too.
Great museum about Charles Dickens .. they have quite the growing collection .. the house is in great shape .. tells his whole story .. but the time we left we felt like it covered all the bases .. they even have the writing desk from Gad's Hill that he wrote Tale of Two Cities on .. you can also see his lectern he would read from to his dinner guests .. well worth the visit ... ..the audio tour is very easy to use ... they every have exhibits that try to get the children involved .. we got to see the great exhibit on Dickens' pets .. fascinating !
Really fun. Love how the actual home of Dickens is a walk-in museum and a tour through his personal life. Well done for kids too. Lots of stairs, no elevator, even though there is a ramp to the front door. Not handicapped friendly, sorry. Very pleasant cafe garden to sit and discuss your impressionsVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
