Canterbury Hotel

Story

One of the finest Canterbury hotels, the Thanington is a family run hotel conveniently located a short walk from the world famous Canterbury Cathedral and Canterbury town centre. Built in the late 1790s, the hotel has retained much of its original charm providing, for the discerning traveller, an oasis in bustling Canterbury.

Guests can relax and unwind in one of the most elegant and historic hotels in Canterbury, while enjoying 21st century hotel facilities. Opening as a Canterbury hotel in the mid 1980s, the Thanington Hotel now consists of 15 en-suite rooms all recently refurbished to the highest standards. The public facilities include secure private parking, heated indoor swimming pool, secluded courtyard garden and private bar (with one of the largest selections of single malt whiskies of hotels in Canterbury and East Kent). All of the hotel rooms provide widescreeen or flat screen TV and free wireless connection. The accommodation consists of 5 superior rooms, including one Suite, and 10 standard rooms of family, twin or double configuration.

The charming enclosed garden, a riot of colour in the summer months, can be accessed from the hotel or from the indoor swimming pool, giving guests the opportunity to relax in a peaceful secluded oasis whether enjoying refreshment or watching the carp swimming in the pond.

From the moment you arrive to the Thanington Hotel in Canterbury the emphasis is on personal service. Our staff are always on hand to offer assistance in planning your day trip in Canterbury - making restaurant or ferry reservations, recommending or booking golf courses, arranging transportation or just suggesting relaxing alternatives for a great day out.

We had a very relaxing stay at the Canterbury Hotel. The room was decent with very comfortable bedding, required furniture and room heating. The overall ambience of the hotel was very friendly and the decor elegant. The breakfast was tasty and we even had good vegetarian options. The Canterbury east station is a 5 minute walk The only con was its location which is not in the city centre which could be a cause of concern in the late evenings.

We stayed over after getting the ferry back from France. Very close to the centre of town and easy to find. Room was superb, clean, plenty of facilities and finished to a great standard. Breakfast was absolutely the best. Anything you could possibly want and the full English was very good.

Spacious clean room, with good shower. I got the last parking space upon arrival, so I'm guessing it can be full. 10min walking to the nearest supermarket and 15min from the Cathedral and High Street.

Good sized family rooms with comfy beds. Heated pool and sauna is an appreciated bonus. Breakfast could have a batter vegetarian option.

My husband, son and I spent 4 nights at this hotel recently while we were in Canterbury for his graduation. It is situated along Wincheap, which is about a 15 minute walk into the town centre. Once you get up to the underpass and cross to the other side of the roundabout, it is a really pleasant walk along Castle Street into town. Now back to the hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and happy to help in any way possible. In fact, they changed our room for us on our second day because we were not happy with the shower in our bathroom. My husband and I were booked into a regular double room, while our son was in a superior double room. Our room was quite small, with 2 suitcases it was quite a challenge to move around. However, the bed was comfortable, the room very clean, and the iron and ironing board provided really helpful. There were good toiletries in the bathroom, bath robes and a hairdryer. The superior room was much bigger, I mean at least half the size again. However, situated at the front of the hotel it was a noisier choice, especially with the flags flapping all the time. Bearing that in mind, if I returned, I would book a regular room again. There is a small restaurant where breakfast is served. The food was really good and the service very quick. There is a choice between English and continental breakfast, a variety of fruit, croissant, and cereals. The coffee kept coming. I believe they also provide sandwiches at other times during the day. There is a small swimming pool, although we didn't use it. According to the desk clerk, many locals use the pool for aqua aerobics, but it is too small for swimming. Overall I would be happy to return to this charming, small hotel; mostly due to its friendly and helpful manager and staff.
