Probably one of the most delicious pizzas in the whole city! I would have given 5 stars if the toppings weren’t so expensive. We added Nduja £3.95 which is fairly priced but the mushrooms and fresh chillies £2.95 each were not worth it for how little we got.
I had an excellent slice of pizza here . It tasted really authentic. I chose the artichoke one and my friend the margarita. Both were hot and full of flavour . It was 8pm when I went and still three hours till closing time - a lot had been sold out making the selection seem a little sparse ! Would highly recommend for authenticity, taste and value !
Pizza was good and saved it from being a single star experience. Pretty much everything about cals own is sub par, but the pizza. They don't accept card, and there doesn't seem to be cash machines particularly close. The service is kind of slow, they got our order wrong twice. Our table was wonky so it rocked constantly. The toilets weren't particularly clean. And we were bought the wrong bill at the end of it all. Just a genuinely poor experience. I can see takeaway being worthwhile because the pizza was decent, though not amazing.
Poor customer service. This place had been recommended to me by friends, I was told the pizzas were a really high quality. I tried to order a take away at lunch time to collect in the evening after getting back to Newcastle from a trip. I was told that I couldn't order over the phone, as they only accept card payments over the website. The website didn't accept orders at lunchtime, so I asked a friend to order for me in the evening, while I was driving. The order was placed for an 8 o'clock pick up, and I got a call while driving at 7 telling me the pizzas were ready. I was an hour away from Jesmond so I got a pizzas that had been kept warm for an hour. And they didn't accept card payments, only cash. The pizzas would probably have been a lot better when they were fresh out the oven. I don't see the point in making a big song and dance about the quality of your food if you are going to serve it at a time that suits the kitchen not the restaurant. It was a real shame, because the pizzas look like they would have been amazing if they had been prepared at the right time.
The Pizza here is amazing. The best pizza I've had in the UK. You'll struggle to get better. Less is more with the ingredients, the owner's menu is designed to choose the set pizzas which are authentic. Yeah they are slightly more than local pizzarias but you're paying for quality ingredients cooked the right way. To finish, please look no further than the cheesecake. It is out of this world - there isn't anything better available. Cal is a fantastic host, working hard. Support your local business and local restaurant.
Had the pleasure of enjoying a Korean Chicken Pizza as well as a artichoke pizza. While you may initially think a slice of pizza is expensive. You realize the size of a slice is a substantial meal and once you take a bite you realise you have the best pizza available in your mouth. The finest quality ingredients equally making the best pizza you have tasted, immediately justifies the price. 5/5 Would recommend to all pizza lovers and I promise you will never order another average takeaway pizza again!
If you need to spend 10 minutes explaining how things work in your restaurant, change how you run it. Sitting there trying to think of interested facial expressions while they talk through every page of the menu is an awful way to start an evening. The food is fine, nothing special and the prices aren't crazy high. Service isn't great but it was the end of a Sunday so maybe they were tired. They charge 5% on top for card payments, which in 2017 is farcical. I think its trying to be hipster/artisan style, but as you choose your own toppings, there's no demonstration of understanding how food flavours work together. They are very proud of the sour dough bread they use for bases, again, it's fine. Our experience: They made a mistake with our order, ok, no problem it was fixed quickly. They then dumped some fries on our table...no explanation so we queried it, maybe they put them on the wrong table. Surly response. They stank. Truffle oil is extremely potent and should never be used to flavour something like potato fries. We had to ask to have them removed from the table, people around us were also upset by the smell.
Use to be, and still is the best pizza in the North East. Premium cheese pie is unreal and great value - easily enough for 2. Only tried a couple of the other slices but all equally good pepperoni and artichoke. People complain about the staff but I personally feel it is more no nonsense and a man who knows what hes doing/passion rather than rude imo.
I loved the pizzas at the old Cal's Own but the service and management was always a bit off. This hasn't been fixed at the new place still cash only, and the pizza is not nearly as good either. The biggest problem, though? No one wears masks in the place! Guys, we are in the middle of a global pandemic! Put on a GD mask. Edited: There's that winning service in action! Thanks for proving my point.
Absolutely the best in the North East. Cal makes the most amazing sourdough, wood-fired pizza. The small plates are also so delicious. Portions are so generous that we usually take some pizza home to enjoy the next day. Highly recommended although do make sure you take cash with you.
