Cafe Des Amis

About

Tucked away from the vibrancy of Covent Garden and London’s theatre district lies the cozy and romantic Café des Amis. We invite you to enter the warmth of our restaurant, and to experience exquisite French cuisine served with passion and finesse.

Story

Someone once suggested that the magic of French cuisine was such that it could even produce a culinary masterpiece from cigar stumps and empty matchboxes. An exaggeration? Perhaps, but what is beyond a cuisine that has the power to enchant one’s palate through the sheer flavour of a rich and tangy porc a la normande or the fresh ocean aroma exuded by a bouillabaisse?

At Café des Amis, our ambition is to channel the brilliance of this tradition, whilst adding our own touch of London-inspired artistry. Dishes like our homemade foie gras served with toasted brioche and caramelized apples soaked in calvados or roast duck breast glazed in a prune and Armangac sauce evoke authentic French cooking, much like the fare one would find at a harbor restaurant in Honfleur or in a bistrot hidden on a quaint Parisian street.

Yet as our menu slowly immerses you into the French, you begin to see flickers of something more modern, innovative and patently London – warm goat’s cheese served with beetroot carpaccio and drizzled with a walnut dressing or venison medallions on grain mustard mash with a shallot and port jus.

Hand-in-hand with a digestif – a fragrant calvados or cognac – we recommend that you finish with what is by far Café des Amis’ most-loved dish over nearly three decades of service – la soupe au chocolat, a decadent chocolate soup served with black pepper ice cream.

I'm a little mixed on this restaurant. I've been there twice and the two experiences were quite different, so I'll average out food and service as just 'good'. The first time around everything that was ordered was very good - excellent, and the service was friendly and, overall excellent. The second time around the service was just fair. It seemed a little chaotic and was formal and not too friendly, and they brought out the dishes at a little too high a speed. The food was a mixed bag, all the greens were dry and seemed old and the steak was slightly burnt. The house red wine was very good however. Price - it's costly, but they seem to hand out vouchers quite liberally via Time Out/Amazon and possibly other sites offering 2 courses and a bottle of wine for two for £29, which is well worth it. However, the real price would put the meals at between £80 - £90 for two, which is definitely overpriced even when the food is good.
I bought a 2 course meal voucher for the downstairs bar upstairs is the main restaurant and unfortunately, I was disappointed. The bar area is cramped with badly spaced out tables and uncomfortable stools. I was literally rammed between a table and another customer. The ambience is poor and leaves a lot to be desired. The food was decent, but still hit and miss. The calamari seemed undercooked, however portions were massive. Overall, I won't be visiting again, but maybe the restaurant upstairs is better.
We came here for a family Sunday meal, with the 50% off food deal. I wasn't put off by the reviews of the bad service, and I am glad I didn't listen to them though my parents were worried. The service was excellent, attentive, quick and friendly. The food was delicious my beef was cooked perfectly, and we left very satisfied. I have been to better restaurants but the reason I am giving it 5 stars is that I couldn't fault it for what it is. I would say, however, that without a deal I don't think I'd be happy with the price. £24 for a lamb main is too much. Would happily go back here again.
I have to say, despite all the negative feedback, my friend and I who work at the Royal Opera House just next to this restaurant thought we'd give it a try - we have a timeout offer and in all honestly, we probably wouldn't have paid the prices if we hadn't, but the food was delicious - GREAT variety. I almost couldn't choose what to have, so many options. I plumped for the crab risotto and scallops, then the venison - cooked rare and oh so beautiful. A few downers - general decor, a little dated, but very much is around London. Customer service was a little abrupt but pleasant enough. The food out weighed the experience. And it was packed, so I can forgive minor faults! I say, go there, try it for yourself! p.s. I was tempted with black pepper ice-cream, but my tummy was full - so those who say the portions were tiny - don't listen.
Visited on a Thursday night, and found the restaurant to be full, and very noisy upstairs. There just isn't enough soft furnishings in there to soak up too much of the noise. Food was good, but not great. I was looking forward to the French Onion soup classic, but it wasn't worth going out of your way for. The lamb + jersey royals side was good.
Booked Cafe des Amis with an afternoon-tea groupon deal -- a disaster. The tacky space was cramped and smug staff were flippantly uninterested and/or could not speak enough English to a remember our reservation, b understand our orders or c respect our group's dietary requirements. Food was awful. Poor quality sandwiches with stale bread and flavourless fillings, hardened store-bought pastries tasting of cheap sugar, and poor quality Prosecco. Do not recommend. Will not return.
We're Gourmet Society members and are entitled to a 50% discount provided that we call ahead, which we did. Twice confirmed with our server, and the hostess that the A la Carte menu is discounted for Gourmet Society members but when the bill came we were told, "yeah, everything on the menu is discounted, apart from whatever you ordered." Considering I asked the waitress on two occasions just to confirm our order was covered by the 50% discount, I feel a bit cheated. The food was ok, nothing more than ok, but I certainly won't be giving them another opportunity to mess me about like that.
Cafe of friends? It's a misnomer. Service is neither friendly nor attentive. The food did not impress - unlike you like dry duck breasts. It is a pretty spacious spot, but nothing warm and enticing about it. It almost should be part of a hotel, but at a hotel I would think you'd get better service.
I recently took my fiancée to Cafe Des Amis on recommendation from a friend at work. Upon finding the restaurant, I was filled with hope as the ambience and style was very pleasant and what I expected from other reviews/photos. However, from the moment we sat down at our table my sense of optimism started to fade. We were missing our forks from the table; a picky thing to comment about I know but for the status of the restaurant, this is a simple mistake that should not have happened. We ordered a bottle of red wine £32 and again, the simple things were not done correctly as it was cold. Two starters were ordered, with one appearing straight away which was good but the other 15 minutes later not so good. But the worst part of the meal was the main course. A nice Rib-Eye Steak caught my eye on the menu and wetted my appetite. But when the steak was placed on my table, I was presented with a grey, pale, lifeless excuse the irony slab of fatty meat which was not a pleasure to tackle. At least 20% was left on the plate. My fiancée on the other hand had a really lovely piece of lamb, cooked to her request. A restaurant of this status should not have random success when delivering their main courses. We were not even asked "How was your meal?" which considering the remains on my plate, I think should have prompted this question. I do not usually place reviews on websites, but for the cost of the meal and location of the restaurant, I felt the need to share this experience. Conclusion: Service was OK although it did look and feel as it they were understaffed, food was way below par, decoration was good, price was too high for the quality of the night.
We booked lunch at Café des Amis in Covent Garden on the 50% off food plus a bottle of wine offer. We both had risotto to start which was pleasent though perhaps a little undercooked but our mains were excellent. For a house red the free wine went down very easily too. All in all a good lunchtime option and very good value with the offer.
