Friendly staff. Good interior and street view. Good standard of food at reasonable prices. Cater for children as well as Adults. Could do with extending the children's menu. I can always find something to eat on a menu (my kids can't). I generally have to walk past 5 or 6 restaurants in Eastbourne before I can find a child friendly restaurant. I had to order from the main menu for my son because the item he wanted was not available on the kids menu. Instead of £2.95 it was £11.95. Simple common sense would get repeat custom. The starter salad and main salad had grit in them. A few small changes would make this a great restaurant where parents could have a good quality meal with their children. Or it can carry on pandering to the grey pound?

Butler's promises modern British cuisine and the surroundings back that up. The venue fits the brief and is well looked after. Obviously some money has been spent on it. Staff were friendly and courteous. I have a soft spot for Long Island iced teas so before I decided what food I wanted I thought I'd kick things off with a bang. It was good and decently priced. We were offered water at the table which is always a nice touch. Between Christmas and New Year is always going to be a tricky time for the hospitality sector and so it proved. The first two mains I asked for on the menu were unavailable so I plucked for the lamb. It seems the menu isn't seasonal so I'm imagining it remains the same throughout the year. Slightly fatal for a restaurant of this kind. Even if perfectly executed, why return more than a few times? The large selection of vegan options would be very well appreciated by some, I'm sure. I had the soup of the day, which was pea and ham. Freshness from the pea wasn't apparent and the ham was lost in the over reliance on mustard seeds. A lack of butter with the accompanying bread sealed its fate. My other half had the mushroom, which she enjoyed except for the lacklustre salad. Out of a packet, with a large chunk of tomato and sprinkling of dirt in tow. Our mains arrived, along with a full-bodied Malbec, with my wife choosing the duck to go with my lamb. Her's was let down by overcooked broccoli and insipid sweet potato. My lamb was tender although I would have preferred it more rare. The crime on the plate however, was the mashed potato. It was crying out for butter and more seasoning. Instead it acted as an anaemic vampire; sucking the joy out of the other ingredients. The dessert menu was fairly uninspired so we went for the not too exciting sounding chocolate brownie and banoffee pies. The chocolate brownie tasted like it came out of a tub from Tesco, its ice-cream no better. A good banoffee pie has the perfect ratio of base, toffee, banana and cream, resulting in a simple, comforting dessert that is not overly sweet. The one offered was not up to the task. It's a shame, as with some tweaks it could be a worthy destination but if you attempt this kind of menu, you have to hit the mark. Butler's falls short.
