From the outside it’s the archetypal country pub nestled in the bosom of Hepworth village on the outskirts of Holmfirth. Inside its exactly want you’d want - dimly lit, a warming fire, and traditional locally themed decor. There didn’t look to be too much room for a quite pint but it was a Sunday Lunchtime. The menu had plenty of options but being Sunday we went for beef and Yorkshire pudding which came with carrots, broccoli and roast potatoes. Topped this up with a side order of cauliflower cheese which though nice lacked the cheesiness you’d want. The beef was ultimately the star of the show as you’d hope - pink, juicy, with lashings of wholesome gravy. The price came in at around £20 PP which isn’t cheap but this is quality food, well prepared and the service was excellent. When The Great Plague struck England in 1665 Hepworth was the most northerly point that it reached. To save the village residents split it into two parts with those infected left isolated from the world in one half. Let’s hope the pub was on the side of the well and able because, as travel writer John Hillaby once said : “Few things are more pleasant than a village graced with a good church, a good priest and a good pub.” I can’t comment on the church, didn’t see the priest, but this is for sure a good pub.
Went for a family meal and all I can say is that it was Fantastic. From the service, the food, to the range of Ale's. Was all lovely and it's been a while since I found a good pub that I would dare call a "proper pub!" So thank you.
It's a reasonably atmospheric old pub with a decent range of drinks. The food usually falls short of what we'd expect for the price and the billing of a top gastropub. An alleged steak and kidney pie was a pot of casserole with the least puffy puff pastry lid I've ever encountered. A pie it was not. Superficially tasty with a strong hit of beef and kidney but no real depth of flavour. 'buttery' mash did not taste of butter. A tiny portion of green beans completed the dish. Very disappointing. A chicken, mushroom and leek pie was just a creamy mush with the same poor pastry and accompaniments as above.
This is an amazing pub and restaurant that has recently re-opened. We had amazing beer Timothy Taylors and some gorgeous snack food. The restaurant is opening again this week and we cant wait to try it. Great staff and lovely outdoor and indoor areas with a new dining room opening upstairs. I could not recommend this pub enough.
Unexpected classy pub. Staff was super friendly, food was very good too! Loved the chicken pie.
Fabulous pub with award winning food 4mins from our rented cottage nr Holmefirth Yorkshire Dales
Went Wednesday lunchtime to meet up with another couple. Mostly OK apart from the dire food. Pork belly ordered by 2 of us. Crackling uneatable and pork belly really tough and chewy. Watery sauce to go with it to pour over cold black pudding mash and no vegetables or greens. £19 - ripped off. My fish and chips was a scabby piece of fish with an excess amount of overcooked batter and some lukewarm mushy peas. 4th meal was chicken pie which was judged OK but not very warm. We didn't complain. Should have really but guess we'll vote with our feet. We were mostly the only ones in there and if you weren't sat near the open fires it was cold. Arranged to meet our friends here after seeing excellent reviews but not for us
Great place, staff are very friendly and made you very welcome. The food was great too faultless.
This is a great pub. Good beer, good food and good service. It's dog friendly as well.
Excellent food and always a friendly welcome. Lovely open fire's burning daily. Staff are always very attentive and on the ball. Whenever my glass is nearing empty staff always check to see if I want a refill. George the manager never misses a beat and is second to none!! Georgina the owner is always smiley and friendly too. Keep up the good work!!
