Fantastic place for a good long walk. I enjoy going all year round but particularly like September October because the colours are beautiful and there's usually lots of different mushrooms out. Great for walking the family and dogs. Free parking, although not many spaces in peak season. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing through Burley.
It is possible to walk a five mile circuit here while keeping to usable paths, partly on the dismantled railway to Holmsley then clockwise back to Whitten Pond, across the road, then back round toward to old railway - which you share with many cyclists on a weekend. There are some pleasant views, from the higher ground at Holmsley and a surprise pond up near there too with water lillies. The water in the ponds is clear with some sandy gradual edges. The wind on the higher open ground is bracing so take a light wind-proof. The car park is full by 11AM on a fair September Saturday. The old railway track near the car park seems popular with families with excited kids and picnics, but mostly cyclists owing to the old level gravelled rail route. Take some excursions to North of the track to get some extra views since the shelter afforded by the trees beside it can block the views.
Beautiful place to go for a good long walk in the heart of the new forest. Plenty of parking and we'll trodden paths to follow including a really old disused railway
The carpark is quite small but the trails around it are absolutely stunning. I visited today and the trail from the carpark is great for walking or cycling.
Lovely walk from here. Choice of heathland or gravel path. Not many spaces
Access turning not that obvious but parking space reasonable, approx 30 cars. Cycle Way track available from car park
Great access from Burley or Bransgore as halfway between either village, both of which have good pubs to refresh yourself up after a walk from here. Would be 5 stars but gravel is always full of potholes!
This is a great location for walks. However i disagree with closing it during nesting season. Control the predators crows magpies badgers foxes snakes etc and ground nesting birds numbers are 3 times more likely to survive. Dogs can actually help by keeping predators away at times. Just my humble opinion
Always a good chance of a close pony encounter. This and an ice cream in Burley are always a must on our way down to Dorset from Sussex
It's a free car park in the New Forest - not sure what else I can say about it.
