I've been coming here for years and its always been very good. Its basically a sandwich shop but when I say sandwich you get a baguette type thing with a good amount of proper filling i.e. it'll actually fill you up. They also sell things like pasties, sausage rolls, cakes and stuff, and its properly home made. Prices are OK, its about £3 for a sandwich but they're a good size. My only slight criticism would be that you cant pay by card, but in fairness to them it is a small business and there is a cashpoint at the bank just down the road so not really a problem.
Some lovely sandwiches — especially the mint and lamb is worth trying. If you’re after something healthy or vegan you’re in the wrong place though. It’s changed quite a bit over the years but their sandwiches are remarkably consistent over the past 12 years that I’ve gone to get them :

I had been to this bakery every day I was working in York. The pies, pasties and rolls are always hot and fresh. The sandwiches are also fresh that day too. As well as sweet treats, I'm sure many locals would say a bakery of perfection. Best time for availability would be anytime before 11:30am. After this time you be disappointed to find your favourites already sold, not to say your eyes will not be caught by another product, for sure! The interior is qaint. Mystic one might say. With being from the bussling city of Manchester, its not very often I stumble across such a place. The staff are very friendly and the bakery is very fair priced. I would visit again indefinetly when next visiting/working in York. Well worth checking out!

Returned 15 years after leaving Uni to find that Browns still makes delicious, fresh sandwiches. Highly recommended.
This place is awesome. Their sandwiches are literally amazing. A lot of students go here because of its location, but a lot of other folks go here too. I’ve often driven out of my way to get much lunch here when I’ve wanted something different, delicious and filling. They also have hot pies and pizzas, and the front of the shop has all kinds of jars of things and some regular grocery items. The sandwiches are the main attraction though!

Always excellent service and the quality and selection of sandwiches is outstanding. Browns has a great reputation for their products and it is justifiably so... If you are looking for the best locally, pay them a visit - you won't be disappointed.
