I've grown up with Mair's nearby since I was about 10 and loved Mair's sandwiches, cakes and other tasty treats since I was 18. It has truly been an honour to have met former owners Eric and Lynda and have been enjoying the fruits of their hard work and dedication for close to 15 years. I've honestly never met a more hardworking couple than these two and I suspect their successors already know what they getting themselves into. From what I've seen so far, they are handling things well and maintaining the stellar reputation of the delicatessen. On the surface nothing much seems to have changed which is heartening, after all why mess with a winning formula. I took the opportunity to try a new sandwich: the veggie hell my girlfriend a BLT, her mum a hot beef and sister veggie hell also. Mair's keeps the same excellent bakery so the bread is fantastic and the filling is generous and flavourful with many, if not all, homemade. Very reasonably priced considering the plateful of food you get this full meal we're talking about here! the total including two cakes came to just over £20 to take away. So a massive welcome to Karen and Liz we wish you every success at the helm; and a massive massive thank you to Eric and Lynda Mair for 20 years of getting up at dawn and keeping punters happy with excellent food and quality banter, I'm going to miss you and wish you success for whatever comes next in your journey - hopefully some well earned rest! Best delicatessen in York, nowhere else comes close. So thank you again Karen and Liz, keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you again soon!
Maid's Deli is probably the best deli in York. Possibly in Yorkshire. Ah heck, probably in Britain. Great fresh bread, wide range of cheeses and cold meats, lots of sandwich options, cakes coffees, soft drinks etc. Staff very friendly and efficient, although it does get busy at lunchtimes so you might have a short wait. Very dog friendly, you can go for a walk with your four legged friend and then have a coffee and a bun afterwards - if the pooch is good, they might even give him/her a bit of chicken! Lovely place.
Went this morning for breakfast, i had the smoked salmon and eggs on toast eggs were extremley salty and dirty cutlery with old salt and pepper. Quite abrupt staff who we got served by. Big menu and quite cheap just cramped tables. Wouldnt go again
After visiting Mair's many times over the years it is still one of the best delicatessens around York. Not as big as in the past but still do superb sandwiches and cakes.
Quite simply the best sandwiches in York. With a fantastic selection and friendly staff, you cannot go wrong by visiting Mair's. When I was a student at York we visited here regularly for lunch, and having been back recently, it was as good as I remembered it being.
Quite possibly the best deli in York, Mair's is one of those hidden gems that only locals know about. They have a great range of fresh meats/salads and will make sandwiches or salad boxes to order. The polish sausage with pepperdew is particularly awesome but their Christmas turkey with cranberry is a triumph. Although they do have a few seats this is more of a takeout deli. It is on a busy junction though, so you'll need to drive further down Heworth Village where you can park on the side of the road.
Very popular deli in this area, and in fact a lot of people will drive out of their way at lunchtime to get a sandwich or pork pie etc here because they are so good. If your timing's off you'll find yourself at the end of a queue that goes all the way outside the door!
Lovely helpful polite staff, nice clean decor friendly place. Food excellant and reasonably priced always busy. The only fault is that its difficult to park so when i go out with my ladies for lunch we cant park anywhere
Lovely food as always however not as much meat in their sandwiches as they used too . The original owners used to give a lot more so sandwiches seem not as special . Otherwise staff all still lovely and sandwiches still made fresh while you wait .
Great deli! Went here for breakfast and the sandwiches were great! The deli looks very nice inside and very clean. Staff was very friendly!
