The library is an absolute disgrace! The kids area is filthy, it’s disgusting just to sit on the sofa or chairs, that have clearly never been cleaned. In the kids area you can even smell smoke of cigarettes and marijuana of people smoking outside, how unhealthy can it be for little ones? And just to make things worse, the area is noisy with people chatting loudly and the pc corner with the music, with kids playing video games. Books are just left in big chests, with no order if you ever want to find a specific book.
Brixton library in the heart of Brixton on Windrush Square South West London. It was built in the 1890's by the Sugar Magnate Sir Henry Tate. And is a grade II listed building. It is open 7 days a week and on the ground floor is; children's library, adult fiction and gallery room that can be hired for events. On the first floor is a large non fiction library, reference library and a quiet study space. My infrequent visits to Brixton library have been very valuable and I am currently reminding myself to make the effort again. But it is a long bus and train ride for me so I will plan the visit in advance. The staff were very friendly and helpful. And they spent some time in making sure that I found exactly what I wanted. So an extra big 'Thank You' to them.
Confident late Victorian public building 1892 boasting a swank of decorative features and flourishes on the symmetrical facade, bequeathed by the “sugar-cube” tycoon, Henry Tate. Grade II Listed functional library that forms an important aggregate element of the ongoing piecemeal “Windrush Square” development and improvements. An veteran Plane Tree in front of the library noteworthy and one of London’s most acclaimed trees.
An old building that's nice. It's quiet small to be honest and upstairs there's a study room.
Great start to Readers & Writers Festivals with Jessica George sharing her journey last night.
The lady was really helpful and helped me do what I needed to
Finally a library with a quiet study room separated from the children area, where you can concentrate in what you are reading. A rare gem between London council libraries.
The evening was amazing I really enjoyed myself and the whole experience was really good a nice amount of people turn up and there was friendly staff around to see us in Hew Locke gave us a very interest narrative on his work giving a small opening into his creative mind i really enjoyed meeting him and everyone around fantastic fabulous events thank you so much
Good book selection. Helpful librarians.
Despite being in a town centre it's not a big library. The computers are scattered all over the place and very poorly maintained with at least 20% not working, and haven't been repaired for months. It needs a refit and better utilisation of the space. However, the staff are always very helpful and very good at asking noisy people talking on their phones or watching video, to be quiet or leave.
