British Motor Museum

About

The World's Largest Collection of Historic British Cars. With over 250 classic cars on display in Warwickshire.

Story

The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts nearly 300 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras.

Situated in the small village of Gaydon, Warwickshire, just off junction 12 of the M40. The Museum building is a spectacular piece of architecture with an art deco design, whilst the Collections Centre building is a modern contrast. Together they stand proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting of 65 acres, which rolls out onto the Warwickshire countryside.

THE MUSEUM STORY

The Museum opened in 1993 as the amalgamation of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust’s preserved car collection.

The Trust decided that the car collection and artefacts were outgrowing its then two locations, Studley in Warwickshire and a museum in Syon Park in London. A dedicated purpose-built residence was needed to give the collection pride of place and open for public viewing.

It was the Trust’s mission to keep the memory of the British motor industry alive and to tell its story to all, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century to present day. So a building was designed that not only housed the cars and its extensive motoring archive, but also had educational and conference facilities thus ensuring its sustainability. The Heritage Motor Centre, as it was first known, opened in May 1993.

Perfect place for a car enthusiasts but interesting for those who are not mad on cars too. Good day out under cover which is perfect when the weather is not great. Also nice cafe on site when you need a break. The ticket to the museum also includes free entry to the jaguar collection where you can view yet more cars.

Excellent museum featuring the history of British cars from the early days. Includes displays of motorsports from various eras and some interesting prototype cars that never saw production. You will also find vehicles used in several films. There's a good clean cafe and the staff and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. If you're a Jaguar fan a visit to the Collection is a must. In fact visit anyway, there are loads more cars to see upstairs including many 'last of line' models. You also get a good view of the workshop area where they maintain vehicles in roadworthy condition.

Great for families that love cars! Quite a varied collection that changes every now and again. Best suited to kids aged about 6 over. There are a few things for younger ones to do with levers and buttons and some cars they can get in but not very many. There are little pedal cars for them to get around in that they love though. It's a half day of entertainment.

The largest collection of motor cars that I have ever seen, including the original MG world record breakers. The exhibits starts with the first cars ever built and then every decade is covered. The impact of memory lane will obviously depend on how old you are but the information board at every model is very informative. The cinema featured original promotion films for models from 60s and are a striking contrast to advertising today. There is so much to see that a day might not be enough, but if you gift aid the entrance fee you can have multiple returns free for a year. Well worth a visit.

You need to visit it with family. Kids will enjoy as well as elders. Rich history of motoring exhibits from around the world. Famous cars from famous movies. What a treat to be there. Would highly recommend a visit and you can see for yourself! Visitors car park needs a bit of improvement where I parked.
