“A collection of hidden gems with consistently good French fare, an adventurous wine list and good value prices.” Zagat London Restaurants

Story

It’s well worth heading off the beaten track to discover The Bleeding Heart Restaurant, Bistro and Tavern, all tucked away around the historic, cobblestoned Bleeding Heart Yard. Legend has it that Lady Elizabeth Hatton, the toast of 17th-century London society, was found murdered in this spot.

The Restaurant offers modern French cuisine, faultless service and an award-winning international wine list in a very inviting ambience, for everything from business lunches to romantic dinners for two – it was in fact voted the most romantic restaurant in the City by The Times. Should you dine in the Restaurant, you might like to begin with the soupe du jour or the ballotine of foie gras accompanied by French beans and artichoke, dried fruits and toasted hazelnut brioche, followed by haunch of Yorkshire venison with juniper-braised venison cheeks and elderberry sauce. Alternatively, plump for an assiette of suckling pig and crackling with apricot and sage faggots – delicious. The raspberry macaron heart and the white chocolate marquise dome will round off your meal in style.

The friendly Bistro with its high ceiling and high windows and striking 19th-century French wine posters is the perfect place for an informal business lunch with colleagues or dinner among friends. Certainly, the Bistro’s outdoor terrace, shaded by a huge red awning, seems far away from the streets of Farringdon. The menu is packed with French bistro classics ranging from escargots, omelettes, coq au vin and steak frites to breast of duck and shank of lamb, plus a great-value list of 450 wines by the bottle.

The Bleeding Heart Tavern is a traditional neighbourhood bar dating back to 1746, located just off Greville Street, which offers real ale from Adnams and a light lunchtime menu for those pressed for time. Downstairs, the Tavern dining room boasts an open rotisserie and grill, and provides a warm and comforting setting in which to enjoy free-range organic British meat, game and poultry. The Tavern is also open for breakfast, serving home-baked pastries and the ever-popular full English breakfast – plus, for those so inclined, a glass of Laurent Perrier Champagne or Buck’s Fizz.

The Crypt at adjoining Ely Place and a selection of charming and atmospheric private rooms are also available for hire.

Every member of staff was kind and attentive. The utmost care was taken to make sure we had a lovely experience without feeling suffocated. The food was delicious, fresh and reasonably priced for quantity and quality. The ambiance is excellent as it give you the sense of being in a small French bistro somewhere of the beaten path as opposed to the middle of London. If there’s one thing I can recommend it’s to get the fries they are to die for!
First things first, the Bleeding Heart Bistro is not the same as the Bleeding Heart Bar & Grill though they do sit just across the yard from each other. It’s amazing how many reviews here are written for the wrong venue… just make sure you know which venue you are actually going to/making a reservation for. The food was fantastic, with service friendly and welcoming; though the wait between our starter and mains was a full 50 minutes, which is a bit long to go on a bowl of soup. Not a place for a quick dinner, though in true French style I think they really want you to relax and enjoy the culinary experience so I wouldn’t hold it against them. Automatic points for the ancient yard location, lending a real olde London flavour to the atmosphere. They trade off the gruesome “history” of Bleeding Heart Yard on the front of the menu, though spoiler! Elizabeth Hatton is recorded as dying of natural causes. The actual “victim” in this very yard was a different Lady Hatton from a story published around 1837 involving a pact with the devil… Bleeding Heart Yard also features in Charles Dickens’s Little Dorrit as the home of the Plornish family. Imagine sitting here reading the novel over a glass of wine. Heating outdoor seating available in addition to the rustic wooden interior. If you found my review or photos helpful please leave a quick thumbs up Merci beaucoup!
A lovely little gem tucked away in a courtyard in Farringdon. It's been a long time since I was able to find a place in London that still offers a classic dining experience that doesn't feel like it's blatantly trying too hard to drum up Tiktok hype, this restaurant felt pleasantly far from it. With traditional French bistro vibes, excellent service, a great atmosphere and delicious food, what's not to love. I'd highly recommend the set menu if you have trouble picking from such a large selection of great looking dishes. A standout favourite already, I'll be visiting again.
It’s quite unique and posh in the area that you can’t order from the bar and have to be seated. Nothing wrong with that, just be welcoming. Not everyone is a lover bird small, but cute place. In Farringdon is a bit much to have a table service.Service: 4/5
Absolutely faultless. My Norwegian friend and I had a most delightful lunch. The food and wine were excellent and the service was informed and attentive. My dietary difficulty intolerance to garlic was dealt with without any problem whatsoever and we were made to feel so welcome. Thank you, Bleeding Heart as always. Dietary restrictions: My intolerance to garlic was dealt with without a hitch.
Booked a table here for 3pm but they actually close the kitchen then so you have to order before 3. Bit of a backstreet, scruffy place with a dark interior and uncomfortable chairs outside and wobbly tables. Food was ok but nothing special.Food: 3/5
The Bleeding Heart Bistro, is situated in the Bleeding Heart Yard just off Greville St in the heart of the City of London. It is a French style bistro with pavement cafe seating. There is no traffic in the yard and the enclosed space is free from traffic. We sat outside and it really felt like we were somewhere in France. The tables, the canopy over the tables; along with the red and white theme, really set the scene for a French dining experience. The service was excellent, efficient, friendly, and we never felt rushed or hurried. Would I go again, yes I would, it was a lovely place to eat and we had a fantastic meal.
We had the most beautiful meal here last night for our anniversary. Couldn’t have asked for a more atmospheric spot to celebrate. The service is second to none and our meal was so comforting yet elegant. Just perfectFood: 5/5
A really atmospheric restaurant in a historic part of London with really good food. The food and service were both faultless, but I've knocked a star off as I felt it was overpriced for the size of the portions. Nice place.
Whilst the food was good, the waitresses were unpleasant, two of them were quite rude so we felt awkward and on edge for most of the evening. We all live in London and frequent many top restaurants - i am an influencer who often reviews said venues, so it's shame this didn't live up to expectations as the food was very good."Food: 4/5
