Story

On Easter Monday 1847, the gates were opened to the very first publicly funded park in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton - Birkenhead Park was created to be the People's Garden - a place where the lowliest peasant to the British Monarch could stand together to enjoy a piece of the countryside in the middle of the city.

In 1850, Fredrick Law Olmstead visited the park and with its inspiration, then went on to design and create what is arguably the most famous public park in the world - Central Park New York.

In 2004 Birkenhead Park underwent an £11.8million restoration return it to its former glory.

Today, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I listed landscape and carries the prestigious Green Heritage Award. It caters for all visitors with a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Bowls, Angling and cycling, as well a visitors centre and access to some of the original structures around the park.

Very nice for a walk, the cafe is excellent and has a great choice of ice creams which they can turn into shakes. Nice coffee and pleasant staff. The park has a nice path around making easily accessible for wheel chairs/buggies but also some rough paths for kids to explore.
Lovely place to walk and enjoy the wildlife. The first publicly funded park in the world and the one that central Park new York is based on. Celebrating 175 years this year
Lovely place for a walk very well maintained. Great for the children to feed the squirrels, ducks, geese and swans. There is a well maintained children's play area. Hopefully this is going to be added to the World Heritage Site listings
Nice open space. Several options for people visiting the park spending some time outdoors. Good for visiting with family or walking your dog.
Such a beautiful, clean, friendly place to visit. Dog walks, picnics, exercise or visit the coffee shop. Beautiful lakes and historic features
Paths, trees, a pond buy a bag of waterfowl feed at the park’s visitor centre, beside the café, play areas, benches, dog areas. Very nice park.
The kids love playing in the playground, climbing the rocks, feeding the ducks and having a picnic in the boat house. It's well maintained and easy to access. The only downside was that the toilets were locked at. The time.
Nice clean park with a cafe in the welcome center. Nice friendly staff and dog friendly. Great for a wonder to kill time before the ferry.
Such a nice walk with lovely scenery. But don't think it's a solo trip, there were people milling about that were quite dodgy, also people camping with tents and others fishing. I was just glad I was with another person.
The park was lovely and all the ducks birds and squirrels were grt and the statute made out of knifes that been handed in to the police was amazing
