Biddulph Grange Garden

Story

Biddulph Grange is a National Trust landscaped garden, in Biddulph near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.Description"Behind a gloomy Victorian shrubbery there's a gloomy Victorian mansion, but behind that lurks one of the most extraordinary gardens in Britain...it contains whole continents, including China and Ancient Egypt – not to mention Italian terraces and a Scottish glen."The "rhododendrons and azaleas are spectacular in late spring, but the pinetum and the evergreen topiary provide year-round interest. It's a fantastic garden for children, with its tunnels and rockeries, and there is a children's quiz trail."The true brilliance of Biddulph Grange "lies in the way that Cooke and Bateman hid the different areas of the garden from each other, using heaps of rocks and thickly planted shrubberies' the design locks together as tightly as a jigsaw or a cross-section of the brain." It contains "a series of Italianate terraces, connected by steps and enclosing small flower gardens' at the bottom, long, buttressed hedges enclose a dahlia walk," In the Egyptian part of the garden, "Two sphinxes guard the mastaba-like entrance to a tunnel, whose darkness is an invitation to explore. Deep inside is a bloody chamber (lit by a hidden window of red-coloured glass) in which squats the half-spooky, half-comic figure of the Ape of Thoth."Garden featuresThe garden is divided into many different areas with themes including: ChinaEgyptWestern TerraceItalian GardenLime AvenueRhododendron GroundThe GlenPinetum and ArboretumBowling green and Quoit GroundCheshire CottageWellingtonia AvenueThe StumperyDahlia WalkLower, Rose, Verbena and Araucaria ParterresCherry Orchard

I love these national trust sites. Lots to see and do here and good for the children to learn a bit of history. Nice grounds for a walk and plenty to admire as you stroll around. Take your camera and snap away. A good few hours to lose yourself in and enjoy the tranquillity. Highly recommended.

This internationally renowned garden is as magical on your fourth or fifth visit as it is on your first... The planting is as close as possible to the original and taking a walk through the individual planted area takes you to many different settings and international styles - albeit somewhat colder than most of the places depicted! I had heard about this place whilst growing up in Australia, and still get a thrill each time I visit 25 years after the first time! Especially lovely on a warm, sunny day, but I have enjoyed many hours here, with friends, having a cuppa in the cafe or just spending time with myself!

What a truly wonderful hidden gem of a place. You need to really explore this place to find some of the amazing things hidden in the grounds. The oriental themed area had our toddler child mesmerised. Plenty to see and do here, could have spent hours on end exploring if the little legs of the toddler allowed it. Visitors must be able to walk on uneven ground and up&down steps to take full advantage of this place.
