Updated as of 09/06/2024 I've been going to this gym for 5 and a half years minus a year due to covid or more and it is an alright gym. It has all the basics and everything you need in regards to an all-round training regiment, but the cleanliness has got worse, there are evident signs of wear and tear of the equipment and building with parts of the ceiling leaking, and some of the equipment is broken with lengthy out of order periods. The studio is big and great to train in but the variety of classes is lacking, especially when you're at a higher fitness level. The constant advertisements playing throughout the gym is a negative as well. You can block these out with your headphones/earphones, but it's nice to be able to walk around without anything in or on your ears and not have to listen to advertisements and brand chart music that gets repetitive. The pool, hot tub, steamroom, and sauna are decent but the showers are very inconsistent, and it has become increasingly overcrowded. The changing rooms need a massive improvement because due to the ventilation, there is always a bad oder and humidity which make it difficult to get dry. The amount of members quiting will free up some space, but with all the other negatives I can see myself leaving for something more expensive and better maintained. If you want a casual experience with all the amenities, I would try this gym for a while, but assess everything, give the management feedback, and make a decision within a month.
BEWARE WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR. I was mainly using the one in Quay street but then it closed down so I had no choice but to use the one in Whitworth St but I found it very busy and crowded since two gyms merged into one. So I've decided to leave and cancelled my membership by cancelling my direct debit, like every other gym, or so I thought. They've been bombarding me with emails and calls saying that I should give them a month notice and expect me to pay for that "notice period" and has even threatened me with debt collection agency. They are just scammers that are slowly running out of business, it's no surprise that you only have one branch left out of three.
Great gym. Lovely staff and the spa is very impressive for city centre location. I pay for myself and the Mrs monthly that's how happy I am with It .
On 7th July 2024 I visited the Manchester branch spa as a walk in customer. On arrival, I was asked to fill in some details and made my way to the changing rooms. First of all I was disgusted by the state of the area, however I continued to the spa hoping it would live up to its name. I was shocked at the conditions of the spa area, I went to the steam room and it was hardly working and smelt of damp. I left after sitting in there for less than a minute and went on to the sauna, which was even worse. It did not work and there was a stench throughout. I thought I would use the swimming pool but the area around it was dirty, with flies and small spiders near it. The water was also not to an adequate temperature. I spent at the most 20 minutes, if that, in the whole spa itself and had to leave. I had been visiting a friend and had travelled over 6 hours so needed a refresher before I headed back home. I had expected more from this company as I had heard so much about the other branches. But I was not impressed at all. AVOID!!
Do not join the club. You would be asked for a month notice to terminate even after 12 months contract period. They closed Queen st branch with only a half month notice in advance. When you want to quit membership you still need to pay for one more month even without using facilities. If you send them an email to terminate the membership they would not accept it. How terrible! They only want you money without providing prompt service.
I would just like to leave a review personally for Scott the PT as he is amazing! He give me an amazing introduction and was so helpful, absolute asset to bannatyne! Went out of his way to help me to feel comfortable on equipment and with my goals as he overheard me discussing it on reception and was massively helpful, truly an asset to bannatyne!!
Bannatyne whitworth street, is a great gym with lovely staff. I’d specifically like to thank the GM for being so helpful when I lost my earphones he went out of his way to retrieve them and I’m grateful for his efforts and kindness, thank you!
Very unhelpful and rude staff. Wouldn't let me cancel my gym membership despite other Bannatyne gym in Manchester that I used shutting down. I also gave them a months prior notice that I wanted to cancel but still demanding last payment.
Update: Andreas responded basically accusing me of making it up. Claiming their staff haven’t spoke to me but didn’t asked me for a description of who I spoke to and then asked me for proof of my injury. Bear in mind I am not asking for compensation, I am just asking to do something about the dangerous slippery surface, I thought this was a disgusting response. I will keep updating here. Oh and apparently to Andreas cant find any wet area I’m talking about. Just cos it’s not wet when you were there doesn’t mean it’s not frequently wet lol ———————— I had to transfer from quay street due to its closure. The floor between the pool and the changing room was so wet, I could see but still fell over and hurt myself. I’ve reported it to the reception when it happened and I’ve also reported it via email expressing concerns around health and safety. They never responded. I would rather not stay in this gym but I have no choice because I like the instructors who transferred over from quay street. It’s like Bannatynes gave up on quality at Manchester branch. It’s really sad cos Chepstow and quay street were fine. Really disappointed.
I have been coming to this gym for around a year and a half. The staff are are friendly and help with any issues you have. The gym is well maintained and has a good range of gym equipment as well as full access to a pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub. I have not personally attended the classes but they run regularly and are included in the membership. It is quite busy in the evening during peak hours, however, this is the same for any gym. The switch from disposable wipes to blue roll to disinfect equipment means far fewer people clean equipment after themselves but I assume it is a cost saving measure during high energy prices, etc. I would recommend this gym.
