AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. We have been visiting Bailey's whenever we visit friends down here (once or twice a year). My mother was wandering the shop, enjoying the lovely (if expensive) wares, and deciding what to buy for Christmas. She often gets some of their lovely books, and stocking fillers, like candles and soaps, for the family. In the summertime she purchased 2 outdoor lamps with tile backs as well as soaps, candles, brushes, cards etc. Being in the area a couple of days, she was making a Christmas list to purchase the following day, therefore writing the name of a floristry book down. She was going to click a picture of the title on her iPhone and ask me for advice - but saw a sign which said 'do not take pictures', so decided to note the title down instead. Accosted by (presumably) the owner (who else would dare to be so objectionable), he told her "get out! I know what you're up to!" she asked, "what? I am simply adding to my Christmas list..." she didn't even get far enough to explain before being cut off and told to leave the shop. She left the premises, bewildered. Suffice to say that none of the family shall be shopping there again, they lost our business from that day and for the future, and we shall spread word far and wide. It must've been the owner having a bad day - because no retail assistant (and all we have met there, barring this man, have always been pleasant and helpful) would dare to behave in such a way.

Our daughter visited from N.Z. recently, somewhere I wanted to show her was Baileys Home, a place I had always recommended to friends, family, and guests when we ran our B&B. When our daughter returned to N.Z., she kindly sent me a copy of Baileys' new book. Just before Christmas, when I was buying gifts for family, I noticed a pile of the same title, signed, on the counter. I asked the staff member if she thought Sally Bailey might sign my own copy, just to make a "circle" of my daughter's visit, and the answer was yes. I returned a few days later with my book, and asked if Sally Bailey would mind signing it for me. The staff member had a discussion with Sally Bailey (I could see through their office window), and returned, and with an embarrassed look, passed the book back to me with a weak explanation that "Sally's grandchildren had just arrived". I didn't quite "twig" to begin with, so asked if I could leave the book for a less busy time but, without further explanation, the assistant passed the book across the counter. I asked the direct question "has she refused" and the answer was yes. As I left the shop, this assistant followed me, and apologised, which was kind. I believe Sally Bailey refused to sign my book because I had left the Book Depository bookmark in place. Our daughter had no choice but to use an online site to send this to me. Remember? She was back in N.Z. All Sally Bailey has achieved here is disappointment for a loyal customer. I have lost no chance in relaying my story locally and now I post it online. It is my opinion that the people who have left bad reviews here probably fell foul of, without realising it, Sally Bailey herself, because I have always found other staff members to be perfectly charming.

It’s not a problem at all that is is not permitted to take photographs in the shop. It is a problem however, if customers are approached about this on the shop floor in a brusque and unfriendly manner. I had personal experience of this recently, where I was snapped at by a female colleague in an unnecessarily aggressive way. I felt embarrassed, rather sad and deeply uncomfortable, it really spoiled a visit I had been looking forward to very much, and this is not how any customer should leave a shop feeling. It would be so easy and more beneficial to extend a bright smile and an apologetic tone to customers where this understandable rule needs to be communicated. Customers’ integrity should not be questioned, if a business wants to generate goodwill and have their brand promoted by customers; their greatest ambassadors.
