5 star for everything i ordered and everyone who works here. Today was my first visit on some recommendations from one friend. As for the food—wow! Everything I tried was absolutely delicious. I opted for there hot meal, fish and chips and onion rings. Everything exceeded all expectations. The ingredients were fresh, flavors were beautifully balanced, and the presentation was top-notch. The portion size is big for regular size. Desert recommendations Raspberry custard pie if your looking for less sweet option. I can’t wait to return and explore more of the menu. Highly recommend for anyone looking for quality food, exceptional service, and a cozy ambiance! Dietary restrictions: You can ask for vegan/vegetarian menu. Parking: A lot of space.
Over the weekend, I was visiting the St Jacob’s Market and this highly rated restaurant was just 20 mins or less away. Me and my partner decided to give it a try. We arrived several minutes before it opened, there was a little line up, but the servers took us right in. The restaurant was large enough to take everyone in, no wait time considering it’s a Saturday lunch time. I heard from regulars the Broasted Chicken and any of their pies are a Must! Fun Fact: You Gotta Eat Here Food Network show came to eat at this very location. The host’s picture and his signature is displayed right in front.
Went to Anna Mae's because a friend wanted to check it out after seeing it in You Gotta Eat Here! Well worth the drive! The small Broasted chicken meal with mashed potatoes & carrots was delicious, hearty and satisfying. And it came with dessert, I chose the chocolate cream pie, which wasn't too sweet. It's a home cooked meal. The restaurant is spacious and comforting. The bakery has so many options of goodies and gluten free options as well. Definitely a place to have a family meal. Anna Mae's will be on my list to eat when I'm in the area again.
I have eaten here a few times over the years and while I would never have described Anna Mae's as having gourmet food it's just not possible when you are cooking for the masses, the quality has definitely declined since my last visit. I had the small portion of roast beef. Both the beef and potatoes were drowning in gravy...there was far too much gravy. The gravy also had some gelatinous chunks in it. The carrots were the mushiest carrots I have ever eaten. To their credit, the roast beef was tender and most definitely not dried out. The service was decent enough. The atmosphere is much like a buffet restaurant....lots of tables that are turned over very quickly to accommodate the crowds. If you want a relatively inexpensive meal that could be mediocre to okay or perhaps good depending on the day I suppose, this would be the place. I personally think I will try other places when I am out in Mennonite country in the future.
The place has been falling apart in terms of quality. The turkey was extremely dry and was definitely made over 24 hrs ago. The pie was also very disappointing very stale and looked like it had gone bad after a few days. The picture show it was served like this. Very disappointed. Edit: one of the senior servers not our actual one was really good at rectifying the pie. She brought out a proper fresh one so my review raised a star based on her bringing the service up a bit.
Let's start with the pros. I get why people come here. It feels very homey. I am from Toronto and I must say, they have a unique concept. The entire restaurant is mixed with the gift shop. You go to the washroom, there are aprons and dresses for sale. Almost everywhere you look there's something handmade or local items for sale which is neat. Mostly old people come and eat here. Wait tome for a saturday lunch time was 30 mins. They have you sign up through their iPad which is very efficient and you get a text. Here is the con: The food. Not sure why it was featured on You gotta eat here. Maybe because they have wide selection of pies. I went to St. Jacob's farmers market and Google Anna Mae's so I thought why not. I must say that it is very disappointing. Coming from an Asian background, I am used to eating flavorful food. We ordered fish and chips and the broasted chicken platter . Quantity is good for 3-4 to share, personally. Platter came with soup or salad. We chose the potato and ham soup with cheese dinner roll which is 10/10. Maybe best soup and roll I had. We chose mixed veggies and mash potatoes for sides. Platter came with 3 pieces of chicken; for about $25 plus pie as our dessert. Ikea mash potato is better. This mash potato didn't have any taste. I chose mixed veggies thinking it was fresh. Mind you, the place is surrounded by farms and the farmers market was selling mix and match veggies for 6 for $10. To my disappointment, mixed veggies is literally the frozen ones corn, peas beans carrots. I don't get it. Bland potato and frozen veggies is giving prison food. The chicken, it looks healthy and they are huge portions;Fried but not like the fast food. I'd give it 6/10 just because it needed more spice than salt. The peach pie was ok. The fish and chips was bland too. We had to remove the crispy part at it was oily and just plain flour. No taste. I had better fish and chips at Nations. After eating, they expect you to line up in the bakery/ gift shop. I think it's a sales tactic because it would be an impulse buy if you are not careful. There was no other place to pay. I saw a sign near the entrance that says please pay here but there was nobody there so I lined up in the bakery. Definitely this place is something you can check out while you are in the are but not you goal destination. Get a small Platter, skip the mixed veggies and mash potato
Well worth the drive and the wait. We went on a Saturday at around 2:30pm thinking it would not be busy; we were wrong! After entering our name in their tablet to get on the wait list, we waited about 45 minutes or so. Busy little place!! We were seated in the front room which almost seems like an extension of the main building. It’s secluded from the rest of the restaurant and as a result we didn’t get the same atmosphere or experience but nonetheless the service was awesome. It’s difficult to come here and not try their Broasted Chicken. We both took the Full Meal Deal. We could have fed a family of four!! This deal comes with soup or salad to start, followed by chicken, potatoes, and vegetables, and lastly, a scrumptious baked-on-site dessert. We were so full, we didn’t need to eat until breakfast. The chicken is definitely something special. The coating is awesome to the point that you just can’t stop yourself from eating everything on your plate. We each had a piece of pie for dessert which came with our meal, they were both delicious. When you go pay, you walk through a cute little gift shop with neat gift ideas. You also pay right beside the bakery, I can see that it would be hard not to come home with something but it’s doable !!
Saw this restaurant on You Gotta Eat Here and it was well worth the drive!! Food was delicious and the staff are so friendly. Highlights: Famous Broasted Chicken! Crispy and so so good Coconut cream pie was the best I’ve ever had by far. Cherry pie was tart and tasty. No pictures of the pie because it was devoured that fast!!
Now, let me tell you 'bout Anna Mae's Bakery in Millbank. Folks there been servin' up homestyle goodness for years, like a warm hug on a plate. They got pies piled high. My favourite ones are peanut butter, Dutch apple, raspberry custard, and rhubarb raspberry custard pies, fresh outta the oven, and savory dishes that'll stick to your ribs. Equally wicked is their iconic country style broasted chicken with their signature ingredients coming straight from local farms, taste that can't be beat. Don't forget to get a sweet little video tour of the "Amish way of living" besides their restaurant. You visitin' St. Jacobs Market? Take a detour of less than half hour, friend. Anna Mae's worth every satisfied sigh. Parking: Huge parking lot but it gets tough to find a spot during the busy hours. Kid-friendliness: Kids love their pies.
